The Bolling family is of ancient English origin. Robert Bolling, Esq., in the reign of Edward IV, possessed the elegant house of Bolling Hall, near Bradford, in Yorkshire, where many previous generations of his ancestors had lived. He d. in 1845, and from him the Virginia Bollings claim descent. Robert Bolling, son of John and Mary Bolling, of the Bollings of Bolling Hall, who lived in the parish of All-halloway, or Allhallows, Barkin parish, Tower street, London, the first of the name who settled in Virginia, was b. in that city 26th Dec. 1646 ; arrived in Virginia 2d Oct. 1660; d. at Kippax, Prince George Co., Va., 17th July, 1789. In the year 1675, m. (firstly) Jane Rolph, dau. of Lieut. Thomas Rolph, by his wife, Jane Poythrbss, and granddau. of the Princess Pocahontas (wife of Mr. John Rolph), whose father was the Indian emperor, Powhatan; m. (secondly) Anne Stith, dau. of John Sttth.
