Asenath was born in 1792 to Reuben Rogers Sr and Temperance James. She had at least 13 siblings: John, Faith, Clary, Mary, Nancy, Phoebe, Temperance, Reuben Jr, Joseph, Rebecca, Abner, Collin and Sarah. Her birth is recorded in the Family Bible.

She may have married between 1810-1824 in Georgia, possibly in Fayette County, to Stephen Smith (possibly the son of Capt John Taylor Smith and Sarah Baskins). She was about 27 years old in 1820. They had at least 2 children together:

  1. Unknown Daughter Smith
  2. John Alexander Smith

Asenath passed away in 1824 at the age of 31. She may have passed away about a month after her son was born. The inscription on her grave may have read: "...she died leaving behind a husband, daughter and an only son by whom these lines are affectionately inscribed . . ." She is apparently buried with her husband in the family cemetery.

  • Fact: Burial (1824) Smith Family Cemetery, Fayette County, Georgia

Research Notes

Her husband's will, dated 7 Feb 1842, names his son, John A. Smith; his granddaughter, Mary Asenia Thomas; and the grandchildren of Abner Rogers (probably his brother-in-law). Abner, brother of Asenath, was married to Bethia Costella Smith, daughter of John Taylor Smith and Sarah Baskin. Family researchers on FamilySearch seem to indicate Bethia has a brother named Maj Stephen H Smith, married to Martha Taylor, but this may be in error, as his family appears to have migrated to Arkansas.

Stephen died on 8 Sep 1842, and his will was proved on 5 Mar 1849 in Fayette County, Georgia. He is buried in the family cemetery along with his wife and Alexander Smith, d. 27 Dec 1849, aged 61 years (b. c1788). Alexander may have been a brother. In the 1830 Fayette County census record for Stephen Smith, there are only 2 white males, age 40-49, and 10 slaves. The 1840 census record lists 2 white males, age 40-49, 1 male 15-19, and 24 slaves.
