According to his headstone in the Roby Cemetery at Allegany County, Maryland, James P. Roby, was born on 27 September 1837 and died on 24 April 1920.[1] The same dates were also recorded in "Allegany County,Maryland Rural Cemeteries" .[2] In a death notice in the Washington Herald, it was reported James P. Roby of Brunswick, Maryland died at the home of his son John O. Roby , at Cumberland, Maryland. [3] James was likely the son of Owen Roby.
In 1840 James was likely the boy under age 9 in the household of Owen Ruby at District 8, Allegany County, Maryland.[4]
In 1850 Parkerson Roby appeared at District 8, Allegany County, Maryland in the household of Owen Roby, with three other inferred children, and was recorded as 12 years old and born in Maryland.[5]
In 1860 James P. Raby was listed at Orleans (District 8) in the household of Edward Northcraft, with his father Owen Raby and Mary Northcraft. He was recorded as a 22 year old boatman born in Maryland.[6]
James married Mary A. Northcraft in 1860 according to the 1900 and 1910 censuses, and it was probably after 4 September, since the page of the 1860 census report that James appeared on was enumerated on 4 September 1860. Note: In a compiled source for John Owen Roby from the U.S. Social Security Administration, it was noted he was the son of James P. Roby and Mary A. Northcraft, and was born at Little Orleans, Maryland in October of 1868.[7]
In 1870 J. P. Roby was listed at District 8 with his wife M.A. Roby, four inferred children, his father Owen Roby and one laborer, Owen Riley. He was recorded as 31 years old and born in Maryland.[8]
In 1880 James P. Ruby was listed at Allegany County with his wife and six children and was recorded as 43 years old and born in Maryland. His father was noted as born in Maryland and his mother in Virginia. Edward Northcraft was living nextdoor.[9]
In 1900 James P. Roby was listed at Orleans, Allegany County with his wife Marry Roby and three grandchildren. He was recorded as 62 years old, born in Maryland in September of 1837 and had been married for 40 years. He reported both his parents born in Maryland and his wife had reported she was the mother of 12 children with 6 still living.[10]
In 1910 James P. Robey was listed at Orleans with his wife Mary A. Robey, and was recorded as 72 years old, born in Maryland, his parents born in Maryland, and had been married for 50 years. Mary Robey was recorded as the mother of 10 children with 5 still living.[11]
In 1915 James P. Roby was listed in the Cumberland, Maryland City Directory as Roby James P, h 122 Elder. Also living at 122 Elder was James P. Roby jr. John O. Roby, an engineer was listed at 116 Arch.[12]
In 1920 James P. Roby was listed at Brunswick, Frederick County, Maryland in the household of his son James P. Roby with his sons family and was recorded as 83 years old and born in Maryland.[13]
