Biography

Elizabeth Jane Robertson was born in Penrith, New South Wales on 8 Jun 1842. Her parents were Francis Robertson and Mary Ann Robertson née Fielder. She was baptized on 14 Aug 1842, presumably in St Stephen Church of England, Penrith^[1]. She is conjectured to have been the only child of her parents.

Elizabeth, a spinster and school teacher, aged 34 years, married John Price, a widower, undertaker aged 52 years in St Stephen, Penrith on 8 Jul 1876 ^[2] Elizabeth's parents were recorded as Francis Robertson, storekeeper, and Mary Ann Robertson (Maiden Fielder), and John's as William Price, currier, and Ann Price (Maiden Cooper).

Elizabeth and John had four children:

1. Halwyn Robertson, born 23 May 1877^[3], died 27 Jan 1904^[4]
2. John Junius, born 21 Jun 1879, baptized 22 Jul 1879^[5]
3. Charlotte Elizabeth, born 26 Jun 1881, baptized 7 Aug 1881^[6]
4. Leopold Tom, born 26 Mar 1884, baptized 17 Apr 1884^[7]

Her obituary recorded that she was:

"survived by two sons and one daughter, viz., Mr. John Junius Price and Mr. Leopold Tom Price (both of Penrith), and Mrs. H.J. Witts (whose husband is manager of the Barmedman branch of the Bank of N.S.W.). Mrs. E. Robbins (Sydney) is a step-daughter. Another son, Halwyn, died in January, 1904."^[8]

Elizabeth, aged 78 years, died on 17 Sep 1920 in Penrith where she had lived all her life. An extensive obituary was published in the Nepean times^[8]. She was buried with her son Halwyn in St Stephen's Cemetery in Penrith^[9]

Research Notes

Elizabeth's husband, John Price, was a prominent member of the Penrith community, who upon hearing of his death at age 69 years were said to be astonished and incredulous. As an undertaker he was widely known in the community. At the time of his marriage to Elizabeth in 1876 he had four surviving sons. His obituary records the following eleven sons (his two daughters, Amy Louisa and Minnie Gow are not mentioned):

One by one the sons have passed away, Samuel Price dying at Geelong in 1855, aged 4 months; Amos Price in 1860 at Penrith, aged 7 days; also at Penrith, Frank Crisford Price in 1868, aged 1 year; Samuel Thomas Price 1875, aged 18 years 10 months; Ernest Marshall Price 1875, aged 11 months; Benjamin Joseph Price 1877, aged 18 years 11 months; Edwin Charles Price 1888, aged 24 years; William John Price 1890, aged 27 years 10 months; and Frank Herbert Price in 1893, aged 20 years and 9 months^[10]

Elizabeth was born in 1842. She passed away in 1920.
