John Milton Roberts was born on 19 February 1846 in Nelson County, Virginia. His parents were William Addison Roberts and his wife, Matilda Jane (Roberts) Roberts.

In the 1870 census, John (age 24), Farmer, was enumerated in Rockfish, Nelson County, Virginia. John was farming the land owned by his aunt, Ann Roberts, who had lived in the household when John and his siblings were growing up. Also present, along with his Aunt Ann, are his widowed older sister, Bettie, and her young son, William; and John and Bettie's youngest sibling, their sister, Ella. John's personal estate was valued at $366.[1]

John married Eliza Blanche Roberts, the daughter of Henry Garland Roberts and Mildred J. (Roberts) Roberts. [source needed]
In the 1900 census, John (age 53), was enumerated as the married head of household in Big Lick, Roanoke, Virginia, United States. His wife, Blanche, and his younger sister, Ella, were also present in the household, as were a number of boarders, and two Black female domestic servants. Living next door was John's nephew--the only child of his sister, Bettie--William Henry Horton. John and William had gone into the livery business together, calling themselves Horton and Roberts. Both of them are listed in the census with the occupation of "livery man."[2]

In the 1910 census, John (age 65), was enumerated as the married head of household in Roanoke Melrose Ward, Roanoke (Independent City), Virginia, United States. His wife, Blanche, his younger sister, Ella, and his adopted daughter, Blanche Quesenberry were also present in the household. The census record shows that John and Blanche had one birth of their own, but no living children at the time of the census. Living next door was Andrew L. Roberts, the younger brother of Susie Gray Roberts, who married John's nephew, William H. Horton. Andy was working as a clerk, and may have been working for John and William's livery business.[3]

John died at the age of 79 years on 7 November 1925 in Roanoke, Virginia.[4] He was laid to rest in the Fair View Cemetery in Roanoke, Roanoke City, Virginia. His Find-a-Grave entry has a photo of his gravestone.[5]
