William, son of John Richardson, tanner, and Hannah Wilson, was born on 3 June 1801 in Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, Durham, England. His birth was recorded at the Newcastle Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends (Quakers).[1]
William married Eliza Brown in a Quaker ceremony on 7 May 1828 in Ives, Huntingdonshire, England. William was still living in Bishopwearmouth and working as a tanner, as was his father. His mother was deceased. Mary living in Houghton in Huntingdonshire. She was the child of WIlliam and Elizabeth Brown. [2] The witnesses were:
In the 1841 census, William was living with his wife and children in Low Row in Bishopwearmouth. He was working as a miller and tanner and they had 3 domestic servants.[4]

In the 1851 census, William (age 49), Corn Miller & Tanner, was living at 12 Green Terrace, Bishopwearmouth.[5]

Eliza died early in 1854 and her death was registered in the Sunderland district.[6]
Prior to 1857 William was the owner, along with his brother Caleb, of the firm Messrs C. and W. Richardson, of the Bishopwearmouth Steam Flour Mills. They retired from milling in 1857 and handed the business over to his nephews Edwin and Frederick. William carried on with his tanning business however.
In the 1861 census, William is recorded as a Widower, living at 15 Grange Crescent in Bishopwearmouth with four of his adult children. Albert is recorded as a papermaker, presumably working with his older brother William. William, himself, while no longer a miller still seems to be engaged with his tanning business and is employing 18 men And 6 boys. They have two domestic servants.[7]

Later that year, on 24 Oct 1861, William's son Charles married Florence Sophia Hensley at Saint Saviour's Church, Warwick Avenue, Paddington, Westminster, England. William is described as a gentleman rather than retired miller and Charles is a Farmer living in Brayford in Hertforshire. Florence was living in Paddington at the time of the marriage and her father Charles was a Commander in the Royal Navy.[8]
On 28 August 1865, William advertised his tannery for sale in the London Morning Herald:[9]
TO TANNERS and Others. - For SALE the BISHOPWEARMOUTH TANNERY, situated in Sunderland, consisting of One Hundred and Eighty-four Pits, with complete set of pipes and pumps, worked by steam : shades heated by steam, bark-houses, warehouses, boiler and steam engine, bark mills, Ripley's patent direct acting roller, &c., with utensils, all in complete working order. The Tannery is well placed for supply of bark and sale of spent bark. It is the only one in Sunderland, and thus has the advantage in the purchase of market hides. - Apply to W. Richardson and Son, tanners, Sunderland.

It is not known which son followed him into the tannery business - William Henry and Albert were paper manufacturers but could also have been involved in the tannery. Either way it looks like the son had other interests to follow and wasn't interesting in continuing the business after his father's retirement.
In the 1871 census, William was still living at 15 Grange Crescent in Bishopwearmouth. He was living with his unmarried daughter Eliza who had a companion, and two domestic servants. His nephew Edwin is living at No.13.[10]

William died on 22 August 1879 and was buried in the Friend's Burial Ground at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery on 26 August.
The burial was reported in the Sunderland Daily Echo on 27 Aug. It described him as one of the most respected members of the Society of Friends and said that a large number of the society attended. Other attendees were from the YMCA, with William having been an important supporter and committee member of the Association. it was reported the a Frederick Taylor said some words at the grave and a service was held in the chancel afterwards.
