DEATH

The Beverly Evening Times January 3, 1921 TRAIN HITS AUTO, KILLING ONE, FATALLY INJURING ANOTHER AT ELLIOTT STREET CROSSING. Edward C. richardson, Foreman at the "Shoe," Killed Outright; Toger Fuller Died of his injuries at the hospital - gates were down, auto brakes fail to work. Crashing through the gates on the main line crossing of the Boston & Maine railroad on Elliot street, a Ford sedan, owned and operated by James C Dennis of 19 Charnock street was hit by a Portsmouth bound train at 5:25pm. Saturday evening. Edward C. Richardson, 45, single, foreman in the setting up department at the United Shoe Machinery plant, and residing at 13 Federal st, a passenger in the car, was instantly killed while Roger Fuller, a 7 yr old boy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Exford Fuller of Maple st, South Hamilton, had a fractured skull and other injuries which resulted in his death early Sunday morning at the Beverly Hospital. Mr. Dennis and Robert Fuller, a twin brother of the boy who died, escaped without injury. the car was carried a distance of 110 feet on the cowcatcher of the engine and then tossed over an embankment above Elliot street, a wreck. Mr. Dennis, also employed by the "Shoe", was taking Richardson and his young relitive home, after spending the afternoon in Beverly. They were going home by the way of McKay street. The smooth roadway of Elliot street was ice-coated and slippery after the storm and Mr. Dennis was almost upon the crossing before he saw that the gates were down. He applied the brakes, but they failed to work and the car crashed through the protection. The engine stalled just as the car was on the outward bound track. A piece of the gate was carried throught with the machine. Dennis grabbed Robert Fuller, who was riding in one of the front seats with him and was able to get out before the big engine plowed into the car.
