John Carrick Richardson was born in 1833 in North Frodingham near Driffield. ^[1]

John is the son of John Richardson and his wife Harriet Carrick.

With Grandfather 1841 Haisthorp

At the census of 1841 John Richardson is with his aged grandfather in Haisthorpe. Also present are his eldest aunt Ann Carrick, and younger uncle Robert Thorpe. ^[2]

Servant 1851 Driffield

In 1851 we find John called Carrick Richardson not as an apprentice but already a servant tailor with Francis Dry. Has he really served a seven year apprenticeship? ^[3]

Marriage 1860 Driffield?

Fanny married John Carrick Richardson in 1860 somewhere in the Driffield area. It may have been North Frodingham. Her surname may have been Grinsdale or more likely Harrington ^[4]

Tailor 1861 Kilham

John and Fanny Richardson are in Kilham, a lively village in the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds in 1861. John is Tailor and Draper with his home and shop on East Street: no doubt Fanny would assist customers for cloth while John concentrated or tailoring. It is revealed that Fanny is already 38 and so by the norms of the day, children are fairly unlikely. Some indexes fail to separate the Richardsons at no 38 from Frances Holmes and family at no 39. ^[5]

Tailor 1881 Scarborough

John Richardson was a tailor in Scarborough the famous seaside resort on the coast of North Yorkshire in 1881. He was living with his wife Fanny in Lower Hoxton Road ^[6]

Marriage 1884 Scarborough

John Richardson marries a second wife Sarah Edmond in Scarborough in 1884. His first wife had been at least 12 years older than him, His second was seventeen years younger than her husband. ^[7]

Tailor 1911 Scarborough

John Richardson is still a tailor working from home, own account, and still at Hoxton Rd. The word "Maker" probably indicates that he makes the clothes from scratch unlike the modern (1911) tailors who buy the suits from Leeds and just do alterations. He and his second wife Sarah Elizabeth, have been married for 26 years but have no children. The third member of the household is William Edmond, who is clearly Sarah's brother born like her in Scarborough, and he too has been married for 26 years and has two children, though neither wife nor children are present. ^[8]
