Robert was born in 1685. He was the second son of Sir Robert Rich, 2nd Baronet and Mary Rich (née Rich, daughter of Sir Charles Rich, 1st Baronet),
He made a career in the army, starting as an ensign in the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards. He was wounded in both the Battles of Schellenberg and Blenheim (both 1704 during the War of the Spanish Succession).
In 1706 on the death of his elder brother, he succeeded as 4th Baronet Rich of London, co. Middlesex (est. 1676 in the Baronetage of England). The title gave him the equivalent status as a knight.
He was promoted to lieutenant, then Captain of the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards. In 1708 he fought a duel with Sir Edmund Bacon, wounding but not killing him.

He lived at the family home of Roos Hall (Rose Hall) in Beccles, Suffolk.
He raised his own regiment in 1715, the 18th Dragoons. That year he was also elected Member of Parliament for Dunwich. In June 1717 he was stripped of his regiment for voting against the Government on a motion accusing Lord Cadogan of fraud and embezzlement. He was defeated in the general election in 1722 but was made Colonel of the 13th Hussars in 1722 as a reward for his support of Walpole.
He was elected as Member of Parliament for Bere Alston in February 1724 changing constituency to become Member of Parliament for St Ives in 1727.
He continued to rise through the ranks in the army reaching the rank of Field Marshall (the highest rank) in 1757.
He passed away on 1 February 1768.
