Research Notes

Note that several family trees reference the parentage with his father listed as Nicholas Reagen/Reagin. His 1870 Census entry actually lists a "white" Bob Reagin and by his 1880 marriage he is listed as "colored" and by the 1880 Census he is listed as "mulatto" and by 1900 he is listed as "black" and finally by 1910 he is listed as "mulatto".

His location in 1870 is in Allenton, Alabama as is his location in 1880, however, he is married in Selma, and in 1900 and 1910 he is living in Selma and dies in Selma.

The reference to his mother appears also in several family trees, and unfortunately there does not appear to be any source document that clearly reference his mother. Under normal circumstances, it would be more likely that Nicholas' wife, Julia Ann Dansby, would be indicated as his mother and it is conceivable that she could be. However, there appears to be enough circumstantial evidence between his skin color as well as the lack of sources naming her as mother to provide doubt as to her being in this role.

It is "possible" that this 1860 Slave Census references him as a 7-year old Male Black child in the household of Nicholas Reagen.[1]
