Lavina "Ann" was born on the 21st of April 1811 in Pereaux, Kings, Nova Scotia. She was the daughter of Benjamin Rand and Sarah Bigelow.

She was the second wife of James McHugh. They had children.

The following article transcribed from Kings County Registry of Deeds records show a land conveyance concerning James and Ann (Rand) McHugh:

"(3)-Deed, May 13, 1845; Registered March 3, 1846; Book 13, pg 373, No. 412; / 55 James McHugh, shoemaker and Lavinia Ann McHugh to Joseph and David Lowden, Mariners, land, north side of Habitant River (same as (1), above)."

Lavinia Ann "Ann" (Rand) McHugh moved with her children and extended family to Wisconsin after the death of James.

She passed away in 1877. Her memorial stone inscription reads "Wife of J. McHugh. We Miss Thee at Home".

Research Notes

First Given Name: Lavina is the spelling in the Cornwallis Township records. She was also recorded as Lavinia.

Land Deeds: The property described in the deeds above is almost certainly at or near 9732 Main Street, Canning, Kings. Although property lines may have been altered over time, and overlay of this current address matches the A.F. Church map of Canning, (dated 1864 and completed in 1872) recording "D.W. Lowden" at this location and "Shoe Shops" immediately to the east.

Note regarding 1850 Census: Note the corrections to the 1850 US Census source below: in addition to corrections to the names, the place of birth for both the Rand and McHugh families is Nova Scotia (not Norway).
