Henry was born in 1825. He was the son of Richard Putt and Elizabeth Cook.
At the age of 15 Henry emigrated from England to New Zealand with his parents and four siblings, traveling on the ship William Bryan. Their departure was delayed because of a fierce gale. The ship eventually departed Plymouth Sound, England on November 19, 1840 in torrential rain "and the decks were ankle deep in dirt". The ship arrived into the new settlement of New Plymouth on 30 March 1841. The William Bryan was one of the first of the New Zealand (Plymouth) Company's ships to arrive at the settlement of New Plymouth, and there is a plaque at Plymouth in England to commemorate the migration.[1]
Henry married Jane Letitia Howell in 1858. Jane was born at sea on the ship London, on the voyage from England to New Zealand.
They went on to have about 12 children.
He farmed “Newton Farm” on Henwood Road, Bell Block.
His first experience of farming was at Moturoa, where, with his brother, he took up a 100-acre section, and was doing well when the native rebellion broke out. He joined the militia, and saw much active service. On the conclusion of hostilities he received compensation from the Government for his losses
Henry was a member of various local bodies.
His wife passed away in 1913.
He passed away in 1921 at the age of 96.
