My parents - George Charles Power and Ada McLeod. My grandparents on the Power line - Percy Power and Sylvia Viola Mills. My great grandparents - John Power and Fanny Norris who migrated to Australia. My great great grandparents - James Power and Ellen Ferris. My great great great grandparents - Anthony (Antonium) Power and Eleanor (Helenora/Ellen) Cotton. I have a Diploma of Family History through University of Tasmania, and have been researching my family for about 20 years.
Dianne Power was born in Ayr to parents George Charles Power and Ada McLeod. I have three full siblings all born in Home Hill - Maurice Percy Power born 4th November, 1953; Barry George Power born 14th July 1955; and Edward John Power born 23rd August, 1956. I also have one half sibling - Rion Frederick Power to parents George Charles Power and Daisy Weymouth Holland - born in Brisbane 19th August, 1942.
Dianne and her first husband Francis Ross Pennisi had one son Damian Ashley Power Pennisi born in Home Hill on 19th October, 1979. He is married and has two children - a daughter and a son.
Dianne lived all her life in the Burdekin district in North Queensland, which encompasses the towns of Ayr and Home Hill - about 100 kilometres south of Townsville. The first 55 years in the township of Home Hill, and the last 17 years at the beachside community of Alva.
Her parents, George Charles Power and Ada McLeod, owned and operated McLeod’s Hardware Store in Eighth Avenue, Home Hill. The business was originally established by Dianne’s grandfather Hamilton George McLeod. When her parents retired, they sold the business to non-related locals.
Education history - 1. Primary education at Home Hill State Primary School from year 1 to year 7. 2. Secondary education at Home Hill State High School from year 8 to year 10. 3. Tertiary education at Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE, Home Hill Campus - Diploma of Business - graduated 1996. 4. Tertiary education at University of Tasmania - Diploma of Family History - graduated 2017.
On leaving school Dianne worked as a Legal Secretary for 20 years, then took a break to have her son. During his primary school years, she worked part time as a Tuckshop Convenor, and then returned to full time employment at the Solicitor’s office for approximately 5 years. During this second term as a legal secretary, she completed the Diploma of Business whilst working full time. In about 1996, she resigned from the Solicitor’s firm and took up a role at Burdekin Shire Council - initially as Executive Secretary for the Director of Health and Environment, and then as Personal Assistant to the Mayor. After 20 years of service at Burdekin Shire Council, she retired at the age of 65.
In retirement, Dianne spends much of her spare time researching family history for family and friends.
