Biography

Edward was born about 1846 the son of Benjamin Porter (1818 - 1879) and Mary (Hoskins) Porter (~1820 - 1882) in Taunton, Somerset, based on the 1851 Census.^[1]

1851 Census on the 30th March 1851 Edward was living at Virgins Buildings, South Street, Taunton with his parents Benjamin and Mary, his siblings Sarah and Charles, and his maternal grandmother Mary Hoskins (80), a retired pipe maker.^[1]

1861 Census on the 7th April 1861 Edward, an errand boy, was living at 8 Pearces Court, High Street, Taunton with his parents Benjamin and Mary and his siblings Sarah, Philip, Prisca (shown as Parsah), Albert, Henry and Frank (shown a Frederick).^[2]

Edward, shown as Evans Porte in the FamilySearch record, married Ellen Johnson on the 12th January 1869 at St Woolos Church, Newport, Monmouthshire. Please refer to the Research Notes on Ellen's profile regarding her surname.^[3][4]

1871 Census on the 2nd April 1871 Edward, a seaman RN, was living in Sheerness, Kent with his wife Ellen and their son Benjamin.^[5]

1881 Census on the 3rd April 1881 Edward, a commercial boatman and coast guard, was living in Leysdown, Kent with his wife Ellen and their children George, William, Charles, Ellen and Frederick.^[6]

1891 Census on the 5th April 1891 Edward, a general labourer, was living in Graham Street, St Woolos, Newport, Monmouthshire with his wife Ellen and their children Benjamin, Charles, Frederick, Gustavus shown as Augustus, and Lilian.^[7][8]

1901 Census on the 31st March 1901 Edward, a widower and a Free Library caretaker, was living at 158 Dock Street, Newport, Monmouthshire with his children Ellen, Gustavus shown as Augustus, and Lilian. Also living there was Herbert Charles Porter, shown as Edward's adopted son, but he was a grandson, being the son of Charles Frederick Porter. ^[9]

Edward died aged 61 and his death was registered in the 1st quarter 1906 in Newport, Monmouthshire.^[10][11]
