Biography

Hazel Elizabeth Perry was the second child, and eldest daughter born to James and Elsie Lewellen Perry, on November 26, 1907. She and her 6 siblings attended the local schools and she graduated from Covina Union High School in 1926. She was accepted to, and began attendance at La Verne College, however with the death of her father, she was forced to drop out and return to assist her mother in managing the family dairy. Hazel married Albert Timmons in 1930 and the couple settled on a 5 acre Lemon Grove/Ranch near the corner of Rowland Avenue and Barranca Street, in Covina soon after. The couple lived there, managing a passel of small farm animals, several other fruit bearing trees and raised two daughters over the years. The lemon grove was a good producer and they were able to contract the sale of their crop to Sunkist. Hazel remained a manager of the home most of her years, however, once their daughters were grown and "launched" she did work for a few years at a local children's clothing store. In 1963, ready to retire, and also at a point where their land was more valuable to be sold for residential purposes, Al and Hazel sold their ranch and moved to a home in the foothills of Glendora. Of trivial interest their house number on Rowland, 19034, was the same as the address at their new home on Donnington. Hazel enjoyed, and was very skilled at needlework and sewing. She would frequently be found with either a crochet needle and yarn or a sewing project in hand whenever one went to visit. She was also an excellent spoiler of grandchildren. Hazel contracted colon cancer and passed away from the disease shortly after diagnosis in 1981.
