Mary was born in Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland in 1915.^[1] She was the daughter of Hugh Paterson and Mary Ann Paton who gave her the same name as a daughter who died in 1912. Mary was raised in Beith with her eight brothers and sisters.^[2]

In 1939, Mary married Frederick Smith Duncan in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.^[3]

Mary passed away in Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland in 1998 at the age of 83.^[4]
