Charles Mark Palmer followed his father George Palmer in the family shipping business (George had previously been the captain of a whaling ship).

In the military, Charles Mark Palmer formed the 1st Durham Engineer Volunteers and rose to the rank of Colonel.

In 1886 Charles Mark Palmer was awarded a Baronetcy and became Sir Charles Palmer, 1st Baronet of Grinkle Park, County York. for his efforts in resolving a dispute between British ship owners and the Suez Canal Company (of which he was director).

Charles Mark Palmer passed away in 1907 in London [11].

In 1865, Charles Mark Palmer bought Grinkle Park in north-east Yorkshire, previously a property of the Conyers-Middleton family. Starting in 1881, he had the existing house demolished and rebuilt. It has been used as a hotel since 1947.
