Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Joseph Oliver is a part of US Black heritage.

Joseph Oliver was born @ 1866 in Talbot Co., Maryland to Mary Gibson Oliver and Henry Oliver. His parents were married on 26 Dec. 1858 and their marriage appears in the Episcopal Church Records. In the marriage record, his mother Mary Gibson is listed as a "free person of color" and his father Henry Oliver is listed as a "slave of Alexander Banning" [1].

Joseph first appears in the 1870 census, for which there are two records for Henry Oliver and his family--one in District 1 of Talbot Co. (Easton) and one in District 2 of Talbot Co. (Royal Oak). In both, Henry is listed as a farmer and most, but not all family members are identical. Such double entries have been found before where a family has a town residency and a farm residency and this may be the case here.

In District 1 (Easton), the 1870 census shows Henry (b. @1835) as the head. With Henry and Mary (b. @1833) are Henry (b@1856) and George (b@1858), who were present in the 1860 Bedy Gibson household, Levin (b@1860), Elizabeth (b@1864), eleven month old Martha (b@1869), Joseph (b@1866), and Jesse (b@1868) [2].

In District 2 (Royal Oak), the 1870 census shows Henry (b. @1835) as the head. With Henry and Mary (b. @1833) are George (b@1858), Linn (Levin) (b@1861), Mary E. (Elizabeth) (b@1863), Joseph (b@1865), Jesse (b@1867), and Martha (b@1869) [3].

In 1880, the only census record for a Joseph Oliver in the Talbot area was for one in nearby Caroline Co. Joseph (1866) was living in the household of Black household of James Webb (1820), his wife Mary A. (1824), their son John R. Webb (1851) and his wife Amelia (1860). It has not yet been determined if the Webb family in Caroline Co. is related to the Oliver family in Talbot [4].

This is being accepted as the correct Joseph because the next listing is for a white Frampton family and in 1870, two of Joseph's siblings worked for a Frampton family in Talbot Co. Joseph's brother, Henry Jr. was working as a farm laborer in the white household of Richard B. Frampton Talbot Co. in both 1870 and 1880, As well, In the 1870 Frampton household is a 16 year old Ann Oliver, born 1854 and an explanation of her connection as a half-sibling can be found in Henry Oliver Jr.'s biography. [5].

The next listing found for a likely Joseph Oliver is in the 1900 Baltimore census. Listed as born Nov. 1865, he is a servant, working as a waiter, in the white household of Edward Green on Maryland Ave [6].

No 1910 census has yet been found for Joseph. In the next census in 1920 in Baltimore, Joseph (1865) is living in a rented home on W. 20th St. with his wife, Sarah (1880) and a boarder, Louis Williams (1855). He is working as a driver for a contracting company and his wife is a cook for a private family. The boarder, from North Carolina, is also working for a contracting company [7].

No further record for Joseph Oliver has yet been found.
