Eleander known as Helen or Nelly was born on 24 August 1823[1] at Berriedale, Caithness, Scotland, and baptised on 28 August 1823 at Latheron[2][3]. She was the third daughter of James Oliver and Jane Turnbull.
In 1841 she was living with her parents, James (an agricultural labourer aged about 55) and Jean (50), three siblings - Isabella (14), Barbra (6) and Eneas (Agnes) (4) - and an agricultural labourer John Lunn (24) at Dalghanachan, Halkirk, Caithness[4]. She was aged 17 and born in Caithness.
She married James Harvey in Latheron on 24 February 1844[5]. She was living at Upper Borgue, and her groom was at Lancrisch. James and Helen had four children[6], the names of whom were recorded in the Harvey Family Bible.
At the time of the 1851 Scotland Census[10], she was living at Ausdale, Latheron, Berriedale or Langwell, Caithness with her husband James (a shepherd aged 31), four children - Thomas (5), James (3), Janet (2) and Elizabeth (3 months), two boarders - Robert McIntosh (an assistant shepherd aged 20) and Sinclair Leich (a farm servant aged 22), and two house servants - Anne Duncan (21) and Jessie Sutherland (13). She was aged 25 and born at Berriedale, Caithness.
Helen died soon after that Census on 18 April 1851 in Berriedale, Caithness[6]. She was buried in the Berriedale Parish Churchyard, Berriedale[11].
Research Notes
Although Helen's birth is recorded in the Family Bible, her death is not. Also, the marriage date listed is 10 April 1844, different from that given in the official record. The Bible record may have been written well after the events and stops at 1922, just before the death of James.
