William was born about 1350 natural son to Richard Mowat Chancellor of Brechin.
On 1 Nov 1377 at the Abbey of Coupar Angus, King Robert II confirmed Richard Mowat Chancellor of Brechin in the whole barony of Fern to be held by Richard and his natural son William and his heirs whom failing by William Monte Alto son to the deceased Sir Robert Monte Alto kinsman of Richard. [1] At same time the king also confirmed Richard in the barony of Kinblethmont near Arbroath.[2] [3]
William's father died about 1382 and William succeeded to the family estate of Fern and Kinblethmont.
William gained knighthood and was designed Sir William Mowat of Fern.
At Perth on 22 July 1410, William Mowat of Loscraigie granted a wadset of Freswick and Aukingill, in Caithness to his son John. This charter was witnessed by Sir John Stewart of Lorne, Sir George Leslie, Sir William Mowat of Fern and scutifers Robert Stewart of Lorne and Thomas Blair of Balthayock. It was given Royal confirmation at At Doune on 28 July 1410, by the Duke of Albany, as Regent of Scotland. [4]
Sir William Mowat of Fern died about 1415.
