William was born about 1295 eldest son to Sir William de Monte alto of Fern
He married and had issue:
It is assumed that his eldest son died young perhaps circa 1345 without issue, possibly he carried the family name of William. This is suggested as William's heir, Richard, entered the church, a role for younger sons. Taking the vow of Holy orders would be while he was still second surviving son.
On 27 Aug 1346 when Henry of Maule of Panmure granted the lands of Carmyllie to Alexander, son of and heir to John Strachan, younger and to Christian, daughter of Henry, the witnesses included John bishop of Brechin and William Mowat of Fern. [2] This is an early record using the vernacular form rather than the Latinised Montealt version.
Little else is discovered of William.
William Mowat of Fern died about 1350.
He was succeeded by Richard Mowat Chancellor of Brechin Cathedral.
