Biography

Magnus was born about 1489 son to John Mowat of Loscraigie and Freswick and his wife Agnes? daughter to Alexander Forbes of Pitsligo.

At Falkland Palace on 20 Jun 1516 Magnus Mowat was granted the gift of the non-entries of the lands of his deceased father, John Mowat of Loscraigie.[1]

In 1518, the earl of Huntly, Hereditary Sheriff both of Inverness and Aberdeen, paid over to the Comptroller of the Exchequer the sum of £466 13s 4d for the escheat of Alexander Hay of Ardendrach, Magnus Mowat of Balquholly, David Lyon, and their accomplices, for the murder of Alexander Bannerman of Watterston. [2] For his part in the murder of Bannerman, Magnus was declared rebel and forfeited his lands. Having returned to the King's Peace he recovered his lands by payment at Edinburgh on 15 November 1521 for the five years and one term of non-entry. The costs of the fermes (duty) were £27, 10s for the half lands of Dryne and Contalwyde lying in the county of Ross with £5 for the relief of these. Duty of £146. 13s . 4d for Freswickwith its mill, Octingill Toftis Skirsare, Strubustir, Sonsaquhy, Blabirquhoy with its lands of Harpisdaill all in Caithness. The relief of these cost £26.13s .4d. [3]

Magnus recovered his Aberdeenshire lands and on 14 November 1523 after 8 years on non-entry when for the elapsed sasine he paid to the Exchequer £52 for Balquholly, Easter Colp, Wester Colp with its mill, Balquholly, Darauch, Loscraigie, Lundrumkern, Brounhill, Woodend,and Foresterseat, and the Smiddy and an additional £44 for relief.[4]

When Magnus Mowat of Loscraigie (Balquholly) died in 1626 his heir was a junior and thus Alexander Seaton of Meldrum purchased the gift of his lands and fishings while the lands were in the King's hands and also the marriage of his heir.[5]
