Milton Montgomery was an American lawyer and soldier. Montgomery was a Brevet Brigadier General in the Union Army. Colonel Montgomery commanded the 25th Regiment Wisconsin Infantry.
Milton Montgomery was born on May 3,1825, in Olivesburg, Ohio. [1] He was the son of Abel Montgomery and Sarah (Burgett) Montgomery. [2]
On April 12, 1850, Milton Montgomery married Ellen M. Turner in Ashland County, Ohio. [3] By July 29, 1850, Milton and Ellen Montgomery were living in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. [4] By June 14, 1860, Milton and Ellen Montgomery were living in Sparta. They had 5 children. Milton Montgomery was a lawyer. [5]

Brigadier General Milton Montgomery served in the United States Civil War. Enlisted: Apr 7, 1861 Mustered out: Feb 23, 1864 Side: USA Regiment(s): F & S, 2nd Regiment, Missouri Cavalry; 3rd Missouri Infantry
On August 14, 1862, Milton Montgomery was appointed Colonel in command of the 25th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry. Colonel Montgomery mustered in on August 16, 1862. On July 22, 1864, Colonel Montgomery was wounded at Decatur, Georgia. [6] Colonel Montgomery lost his right arm and was captured. After he was exchanged, Colonel Montgomery participated in the Carolinas Campaign. From January 29 to March 28, 1865 Colonel Montgomery commanded a brigade in Division I, XVII Corps of the Army of the Tennessee. He again commanded a brigade from May 20 to June 7, 1865. Colonel Montgomery mustered out of service on June 7, 1865. [7]
President Johnson nominated Montgomery for Brevet Brigadier General promotion. On March 12, 1866, the Senate confirmed his promotion with rank from March 13, 1865. [8]
Postbellum
After the War, Montgomery returned to Sparta, Wisconsin and resumed his law practice. [9] By June 24, 1880, Milton and Ellen Montgomery had moved to Lancaster County, Nebraska. Milton Montgomery was practicing law. [10]
Death
Brevet Brigadier General Milton Montgomery passed away in 1897. He was buried at Wyuka Cemetery, Lincoln, Nebraska. [1]
