Biography

Andrew Moffat was born in Scotland.

Andrew Moffat (1863-1944) was born in Aithsting parish in Shetland in 1863. He was the son of William Moffat and Helen Tait. ^[1]

His family lived at Garths, a croft in the parish ^[2] and one of the few times he was recorded elsewhere was in 1881 when he was working as a servant in the neighbouring croft of North Gardie. ^[3]

He married on the 28th November 1889 in Lerwick to Margaret Christina Balfour ^[4]

and took his bride to live back at Garths. They had their first son, Thomas, before the 1891 census ^[5] with another 4 children, John (1892), Elizabeth (1895), William (1897), Jessie Catherine (1899) before the next census in 1901. ^[6]

Andrew spent his time between fishing and working the croft. By 1911 the family was complete with the additions of Andrew (1901), Thomasina (1904) and Arthur (1906). ^{[7] [8]}

He was still residing there in 1940. ^[9]

He died in 1944 in Sandsting Parish. ^[10]
