Biography

Ann was born in 1810, the daughter of William Mitford and Ann Irwin. She was the eldest of seven children. The spelling of the surname has been recorded as Mitford, Milford and Midford.

Ann Mitford was married in Newcastle upon Tyne to Andrew Hume, a carpenter and joiner living in Aylington. Their wedding was at St John's Parish on 15 November 1835.

Andrew's brothers emigrated to Australia, and there seems to have been an arrangement that Ann and Andrew would join them soon after. They set sail for Australia after the birth of their son, Robert Hume. They arrived in Sydney in 1839 on the ship Andromache. The passenger list gives Ann's age as 27, her husband 29 and their son Robert, 2.

Ann Hume was widowed and remarried in 1852 to William Gibbison. They were married in Sydney on 18 March 1852. They emigrated from Australia to New Zealand.

She passed away in 1885 at age 75 and is buried in Waikato New Zealand.
