Biography

Ann Mitchell, was the first child born to George and Mary Mitchell and was baptised on 19 February 1826 at St Peter & St Paul Church, Warsop. Her parents residence was noted as Market Warsop and father’s occupation as a labourer. Ann was perhaps named after her paternal grandmother, Ann Bowskill.

In 1846, George and Mary Mitchell’s eldest child, Ann Mitchell, married local boy, James Davison at St Wilfrid’s Church, Marnham on 23 April. The marriage register notes James Davison 21 yrs, labourer and Ann Mitchell, 20 years, servant both residing at Marnham. Witnesses to the marriage were Elizabeth Ancliff (Ann's grandmother?) and George Marshall.

Ann Mitchell Davison is shown in the 1851 Census (8 April) living on 7 acres of cottage land at Marnham with her husband James and two children per below.

In July 1851 Ann Davison nee Mitchell’s parents and siblings decided to emigrate to New South Wales, Australia. Ann remained behind in England with her husband and family.

The 1861 Census (7 April) has Ann Davison nee Mitchell and family residing in the hamlet of Skegby, Marnham, Nottinghamshire as follows:

Shortly after this census Ann Mitchell Davison was to experience two deaths in her family. Firstly on 8 April, her 13 year old son, William died, followed by husband James, 37 years old, on 22 June 1861.

As if the widowed Ann Davison hadn’t experienced enough grief, her youngest son, Thomas, died in January 1870 aged 14 yrs, at Marnham.

George Mitchell Senior now returned from Australia is captured in the 1871 Census living with his widowed eldest daughter Ann Davison and his granddaughter Mary Jane Davison at Normanton Lane Cottage, Marnham.

Ann’s father, later moves in with his son George Jnr and is captured living with his son and family in the 1881 Census.

The 1891 Census records Ann Mitchell Davison living with her unmarried daughter, Mary and a widowed lodger at Saville St, East Retford, Nottinghamshire.

There is a death recorded in East Retford, Nottinghamshire in 1909 for an Ann Davison and it is probably our Ann Mitchell Davison (to be confirmed). Update - this Ann Davison is the widow of a Henry Davison, joiner so is not our Ann.
