Biography

Patrick was born about 9 Nov 1620.

He married Isabel (Unknown) Miller (1602-aft.1650).

He married Elizabeth (Unknown) Miller (abt.1645-).

He married Margaret (Hardy) Miller (1625-1673) on 18 Jun 1650 in Edinburgh Parish, Scotland.

Patrick settled in Lancaster County, Virginia Colony, by 1658. The county began taxing him that year based on his labor force, assessing him for four tithables, 31 Oct 1658,[1] for three tithables, 30 Nov 1659,[2] and for four tithables, 15 Nov 1660.[3]

His labor force remained fairly static in subsequent years. For instance, he was assessed in Lancaster County, Virginia Colony, 22 Nov 1668, for four tithables, on the county’s "southside,"[4] i.e., the part of the county that was then south of the Rappahannock River.[5]

He died before 1 Nov 1675.

Research Notes

TIES OF PATRICK MILLER TO JAMES MILLER OF YORK CO., VA

THE BELOW DOCUMENT TIES EDWARD MILLER, I (son of James Miller of York Co.) TO MY MILLER'S IN MIDDLESEX COUNTY, VIRGINIA. Edward Miller II would have been too young in 1682. I have not identified any other Edward Miller that this could have been to-date. The only surname in the document that may relate to this Edward Miller would be Smith (Edward's wife was a Sara Smyth/Smith). Also many of the surnames are Scottish: Mackrory; Williamson; Robinson.

10/3/1697: Source: "Middlesex County, Virginia Wills, Inventories & Accounts, 1673-1812" published in 1989:

"(p. 110) John Sheppard....3 Oct 1682 / 7 Feb 1697... Son John Sheppard and daughter Frances Sheppard (both underage). Wife Frances Sheppard. Daughter Clara Sheppard. Brother Mr. Alexander Sheppard in Parham - Latcheston In Suffolk CO in England. Goddaughter Frances Mackrory and godson Robert Williamson. Godson Richard Robinson and goddaughter Ann Robinson. Kinsman Mr. Richard Robinson, brother Mr. Christopher Robinson and Mr. Alexander Smith. Exors: Wife and son. Wit: Thomas Hucklescott (?), Joseph Smith and EDWARD MILLER (Thomas Hucklescott and Joseph Smith appeared at the probate in 1697)." EDWARD MILLER may not have appeared at the probate due to the fact he likely past away several years after the will was written but prior to when it was probated.

NOTE: Parham, Suffolk County, England is 100 miles northeast of London near the North Sea about 150 miles due west of the Netherlands/Belgium across the sea.

NOTE: It is estimated that the Edward Miller I died about 1695; so he would not have been around to sign John Sheppard's will's probate in 1697 as noted above (another indication that the Edward Miller I is the Edward Miller that witnessed John Sheppard's will in 1682).

NOTE: ALEXANDER SMITH (noted as a "brother" of John Sheppard's 1682 will) also was an Exors. of a WILLIAM GORDON's 1685 will with a JOHN BATCHELDER. John Batchelder was the grandfather of Joseph Batchelder (1727-1785) who married the grand daughter of John Miller (son of Patrick Miller b-1620 in Scotland), Michael Miller. So there seems to be a tie between the EDWARD MILLER in John Sheppard's 1682 will and the family of Patrick Miller b-1620 in Scotland:

6/6/1698: same source as above: "Richard Gabriell, administrator of Patrick Mulari, decd." 1698 would be about 25 years after what is about the time it is thought this Patrick Miller on this profile died; however in Scotland it seems he was listed as Patrick "Millar" so "Mulari" MAYBE a transcription error since this is the only reference to "Mulari" in the Middlesex County, VA book of wills, etc. Index.

NOTE: (from Wikipedia): "The Miller surname is thought to have originated in Bavaria, Germany. As hereditary surnames began to be adopted in that area beginning in the 12th century, people were often identified by the kind of work they did. Miller is an occupational name for a miller, derived from the Old Germanic "Mulinari."

My father's (Miller) side DNA does show some DNA segments typical of Bavaria, Germany; not sure this Patrick "Mulari" relates to Patrick Miller, Sr. of this WikiTree profile (a number of years after his likely death).

4/2/1694: same source as above on Page 155: "(p. 683) RICHARD GABRELL, Surveyor of Highways, in the room of John Brim. Mr. Edward Canady appointed in the room of Robert Chowning." Several of Patrick Miller, Sr.'s descendant were Surveyors of Highways, so maybe the 6/6/1698 document noting Patrick Mulari does deal with Patrick Miller, Sr.

3/31/1710: same source as above on Page 50: "(p. 226) Inventory of Estate of RICHARD GABRIEL, decd., for William GORDON, administrator." NOTE: ALEXANDER SMITH noted as "brother" in John Sheppard's 1682 will witnessed by an EDWARD MILLER also was an Exors. of a WILLIAM GORDON's 1685 will. WILLIAM GORDON noted in the 3/31/1710 document above could have been the son of the WILLIAM GORDON ALEXANDER SMITH was an Exor. of his 1685 will. So this also could connect Patrick Miller, Sr. b-1620 to John Sheppard and the EDWARD MILLER who witnessed his 1682 will. NOTE: This EDWARD MILLER could have been Edward Miller, Jr. (b-1631 London) the brother of the John Barbee I's grandmother (Ann Miller). John Barbee I married Christopher Miller, Sr.'s daughter (Patrick Miller, Sr.'s grand daughter) - Ann (Miller) Barbee.

POSSIBLE WIFE OF EDWARD MILLER I (SARA (SMYTH) MILLER) ALSO APPEARS IN MIDDLESEX CO.

The following statement in "Middlesex County, Virginia Wills, Inventories & Accounts, 1673-1812" published in 1989 seems to indicate that the Patrick Miller on this profile died sometime prior to 11/1/1675 and would indicate he left a will (which I have not found a copy to-date). Patrick could have left the will in Scotland I assume:

"p.43) Hannah Lee sues over a mare bequeathed by Patrick Miller, her brother, to Sarah Miller 1 Nov 1675"

The only Sara Miller (within my known family members) that I have identified to-date alive in 1675 is Sara (Smith/Symthe) Miller b- Abt. 1650 who lived in Isle of Wight Co., VA (about 25 years old in 1675); wife of Edward Miller I (son of James Miller b- Abt. 1617). Patrick Miller, Sr.'s son Randolph Miller did mention a grand daughter Sara Miller in his 1720 will; however I estimate this Sara Miller was not born until about 1717 (42 years after the Sara Miller mentioned in the 11/1/1675 suit over the mare).

EDWARD MILLER IV? (WikiTree ID: Miller-52936) APPEARS IN HENRICO CO., VA WITH KNOWN MILLER DESCENDANTS OF PATRICK MILLER b-1620

1757 Isle of Wight Co., VA: Thomas Miller noted as son-in- law/Ex to Richard Robinson in Richard's Sept, 1757 will & Edward Miler is noted as son to Thomas Miller; other Leg: Richard's wife & God-daug Betty Wilson; Wit: George Wilson; Rebecca Miller-mother? No Isle of Wight documents discovered to date related to this Edward Miller, and he was not noted in the 1782 county census so he had died by then or moved to another county. No known children discovered at this point. This Edward Miller IV would be a descendant of James Miller b-Abt. 1617 (likely brother of the Patrick Miller of this profile).

My cousin, Ann Virginia "Jean" Agnew's papers in Library of Virginia do note that there was an Edward Miller on the 1783 Henrico Co., VA Census with 7 slaves. Other Miller's noted in 1783 Henrico Co. census are Dabney Miller (18s); John Miller (6s); 2nd John Miller (2s); "Nat." Miller (2s); Richard Miller (blank s); William Miller( 17s); 2nd William Miller (blank s).

I have not found any documented Edward Miller's from the Middlesex Co., VA Miller line. I think the given name Edward came into the family when James Miller b- Abt. 1610 married Mary Trotman and Mary's father was Edward Trotman so James & Mary named a son, Edward Miller b- Abt. 1644 after Mary's father. This Edward Miller purchased 250 acres in Isle of Wight Co., VA in 1666 and lived there (named his son also Edward; who then named his son Edward Miller; etc to the Edward Miller-IV of this WikiTree profile. So I am inclined to state that the Edward Miller noted in the 1783 Henrico Co. Census was Edward Miller-IV from Isle of Wight Co., VA who would be Dabney Miller b-1750 3rd. cousin once removed and in his mid 40's in 1783. Edward Miller-IV likely moved to Henrico Co. as a young man and may have later joined Dabney Miller in Henrico Co. to work with him on his contract(s) to supply George Washington's armies. My Miller's disappeared in Isle of Wight Co., VA by about 1800. "Nat" (Nathaniel) Miller was also a known descendant of Patrick Miller b-1620. Nathaniel actually was living with his cousin Dabney Miller in Richmond during the 1782 Census (his occupation was listed as "wagoneer" so he was involved with the movement of materials.

Woodson family that may indicate a tie between James Miller and Patrick Miller's son Randolph Miller:

https://archive.org/stream/jstor-1915487/1915487#page/n9/search/Miller

Marriage ties between York Co., VA James Miller b- Abt. 1617 and Randolph Miller in Lancaster Co., VA

James Miller’s (b- Abt. 1617) granddaughter (Elizabeth Lewis) married Robert Woodson, Jr. in Abt. 1682 in Henrico Co., VA; and then married Elizabeth’s sister (Sarah Lewis) in 1691 also in Henrico Co., VA after Elizabeth had died.

Randolph Miller’s (b- Abt. 1650) granddaughter's (Mary Miller b- Abt. 1715 Lancaster Co.) 2nd husband was Robert Woodson, Jr.’s brother (Benjamin Woodson) son (John Woodson b- Abt. 1706 Henrico Co., VA)

From the same link above a Sara Miller marries into the Woodson family in later generations; however I was not able to quickly identify if this Sara Miller is related to me.

TIES OF PATRICK MILLER TO PATRICK MILLER, PIONEER OF STEAM NAVIGATION

A Y-DNA match (with the surname of MILLER) to my Y-DNA test on FamilyTreeDNA posted a family tree on the site which traced him back to Mathew Miller of Glenlee (grandfather of Patrick Miller, Pioneer of Steam Navigation). If this person's family tree is accurate this would be a clear indication that I and Patrick Miller, Pioneer of Steam Navigation descend from the same male Miller (assumed to be Patrick Miller b-1620 of this profile).

Mathew was a male given named of a few other descendants (in America) of Patrick Miller of this profile. I also found a 8/24/1689 York Co., VA court document (on page 20 of link at the end of this paragraph) related to a disagreement over payments for tobacco on a ship between a Mathew Miller and a William Irish and John Battin. Patrick Miller of this profile possible brother, James Miller died in York Co., VA in 1656 and James Miller's son (also named James Miller) died in York Co., VA in 1678 (if I recall the year correctly). There is no way at this point to know if this Mathew Miller in York Co., VA in 1689 was related to my Miller family in the same county. https://dcms.lds.org/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE8323196

I am going to assume that Patrick Miller Sr. had a son named Mathew Miller b- Abt. 1650, and he is the Mathew Miller (with several sources noted) in the FamilySearch.org family tree link below which gives the names/birth years/etc. of Mathew and Agnes Guthrie’s children (at least the 1st child listed born (John Miller b-1670) with no sources noted is likely in error given Mathew would have been 15 when John was noted as born). This Mathew Miller is noted to have also had a son named Patrick Miller (named after Mathew's father?); however no sources are noted for the child Patrick Miller in the family tree. The Clan MacFarlane Genealogy site notes this Mathew Miller as born in 1655; however Mathew would have only been about 17 years old when his 1st DOCUMENTED child was born (Mary Miller b- 12/26/1672) if Mathew was born in 1655. So I feel the birth year (1650) noted in the family tree below is a better birth year for Mathew Miller (he would have been 22 when his 1st documented child was born). Also if Mathew was born in 1650, it makes more sense that he may have been Patrick Miller, Sr.’s son given Patrick Miller, Sr. is 1st documented in Middlesex Co., VA in 1653 in a land patent. One item that is not explained is why Patrick Miller, Sr. would not have brought Mathew Miller to Virginia with him. This MAYBE explained if Patrick Miller, Sr. had a 1st wife just prior to marrying Margaret Hardy on 6/18/1650 who had died and their assumed child (Mathew Miller) stayed in Scotland and was raised by relatives/others. Mathew could also have been left in Scotland with family given he likely would have been too young to survive the long sea voyage One family tree I found noted a John Miller as Mathew Miller’s father; however no sources were noted. So this assumption that Mathew Miller (grandfather of Patrick Miller, of Dalswinton 1731-1815), was the son of my Patrick Miller, Sr. is by no means certain. I am listing this relationship as UNCERTAIN on WikiTree.com.

A genealogical and heraldic history of the commoners of Great Britain and Ireland, enjoying territorial possessions or high official rank; but univested with heritable honours : Burke, John, 1787-1848 : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive

https://archive.org/details/genealogicalheral02burk/page/340

From book/link noted above (Warner, of Ardeer family section; page 341 in footnote at bottom of page): "Another daughter of the Rev. William Guthrie, of Fenwick, m. MATTHEW MILLER, ESQ. of Glenlee, ancestor of the present Sir William Miller, bart. of Glenlee, a senator of the College of Justice."

It appears from earlier statements on page 340 of the book that Rev. William Guthrie was a PRESBYTERIAN. Patrick Miller of this profile's son (Alexander Miller that immigrated to Pennslyvania around 1730 with many of his children and grandchildren) was also a PRESBYTERIAN. Also noted is that Patrick Warner, Esq., of Ardeer's child married Alexander Miller, Esq. of MONKCASTLE in 1800.

From page 349 of the same book/link above Alexander Miller, Esq. of MONKCASTLE is noted to descend from a William Miller ("founder of this family"). William Miller has two sons ("William, a merchant in Glasgow, Alexander, who was admitted a burgess of that town, in 1717"). So if Alexander the Glasgow Burgess was say 35 in 1717, he would have been born about 1682. This would mean that Alexander's father (William the founder) would have been born about 1650. So William Miller COULD have been a William Miller, an unlisted son of Patrick Miller, Sr. b- 1620 who immigrated to Virginia by 1653 when Patrick's 1st land patent was recorded in Middlesex County, Virginia. If William Miller, the founder was a son of Patrick Miller b-1620; this would mean that both the Alexander Miller, Esq. of MONKCASTLE and the MATTHEW MILLER, ESQ. of Glenlee both descend from Patrick Miller b-1620. Generally when families married members of other families each of the two families members were related within that family surname.

INDICATIONS MY MILLER FAMILY'S INVOLVEMENT WITH THE TOBACCO TRADE

Below document was found at the HathiTrust link below:

https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=nyp.33433071389823;view=1up;seq=124;size=75

1/2/1636 (assume this may not be date corrected and could be 1/2/1637); note WikiTree James Miller-1413 arrived in Virginia 4/26/1637 on the ship Tristram & Jane out of London with his wife Mary. There was also a James Miller at age 18 who arrived in Virginia in May, 1635 on the ship Plain Jane. The James Miller arriving in 1635 and the James Miller arriving in 1637 may have been the same person. I am ASSUMING this James Miller (lived in York County, Virginia) was the brother of Patrick Miller, Sr. given their close estimated birth years and a few associations of each of their families (but by no means is this certain). Jim Miller

A James Miller is noted in the Extracts from the records of the burgh of Glasgow....1630-1662. In a document (I believe written in Scots so difficult for me to read) related to licenses for the retailing of tobacco along with 9 other persons:

James Miller

William Hyndshaw

Hector Cumeing

Johnne Bryssonun

David Quhythaw

Robert Bailyea

Robert ALEXANDER

Robert BOGLE

John CLERK

Johnne WILSOUN

Several of the surnames above of the men obtaining a license to retail tobacco with a James Miller in Glasgow, Scotland are associated with the areas/families of my Miller's in Virginia:

1. There was a 1769 court case in Middlesex County, Virginia (where my direct line Miller's lived in the 1600's and 1700's) between a Robert BOGLE (London Merchant) and a David Loudon (Mariner). Page 5 of Middlesex Co., Virginia Wills, Inventories & Accounts, 1673-1812 published in 1989: "Robert BOGLE of London, Merchant, states that David Loudon of Essex CO became indebted to him on 22 Jun 1767 for the purchase of some lots on Essex Street in Colchester Town, Fairfax CO. Apr 1769"....."David Loudon, Mariner, states that he shipped TOBACCO to Robert BOGLE in 1763 and was never paid for it. Jul 1769"

2. A daughter of Dabney Miller (1750-1804)-my relative, a wealthy merchant in Virginia with several land holdings and also owned Miller's Tavern (now town of Millers Tavern, Virginia) married an ALEXANDER. Mary Ann Miller (1778-1829) married Robert ALEXANDER (1778-1853). Robert ALEXANDER descends from John ALEXANDER (1712-1776) of Glasgow, Scotland.

3. Another daughter, Elizabeth Anderson Miller (1790-1855), of Dabney Miller (1750-1804) also married an ALEXANDER. Elizabeth married Reuben ALEXANDER (1775-?) who also descends from John ALEXANDER (1712-1776) of Glasgow, Scotland. Reuben ALEXANDER had married Elizabeth Anderson Miller's sister, Betsey Miller a few years earlier; however Betsey died a few years after she married Reuben ALEXANDER.

4. James Miller's assumed brother's (Patrick Miller, Sr. b-1620 in Scotland) assumed son's (Mathew Thomas Miller b-Abt. 1650 in Scotland) daughter, Janet Miller married a John BOGLE (b- Abt. 1685).

5. My Miller relatives had many associations with the WILSON's/"WILSONUN's" in Virginia county documents as well as the CLARK's/"CLERK's"; and married into each of these families.

1636 (could be 1637) was quite early in the history of tobacco in Virginia. This document MAY indicate my Miller's involvement with some of the first trade of Virginia tobacco back to Scotland. It is possible that my Miller's involvement with Virginia tobacco trade was originally back to England and maybe by the later 1600's back to Glasgow, Scotland. James Miller (on this profile) married into a family (Trottman's) in London/Bristol, England; and his descendants seemed to have more associations with people from England than my Middlesex Co., VA Miller's. It is possible James Miller represented the family in England. Many Scot merchants had family members in the London area representing their merchant businesses. James Miller's possible brother Patrick Miller (as well as Patrick's descendants up to the late 1700's) was highly likely a Scottish Tobacco Factor (merchant) who arrived in now Middlesex County, Virginia about 1650.

Miller Street (one block over from Virginia Street) in Glasgow, Scotland was named in 1760 for "John Miller of Westerton whose property it was carried through". John Miller's property was named "Provanside Park". John Miller was a maltman in Glasgow. John Miller was the heir of his grandfather John Woddrow who was also a maltman in Glasgow and quite wealthy. John Miller's estate was settled 1/16/1787; based on Miller Street being named for his property Miller St. ran through in 1760 as well as his death in about 1787; I would estimate John Miller was born in the 1710's or 1720's. There were numerous John Miller's born in this time frame in Glasgow on FamilySearch.org; however I do not have enough info. to say which one if any was John Miller of Westerton. John Miller's Miller Street property and others were left to his grandson John Alston (youngest son of James Alston a merchant in Glasgow), and MARION MILLER of Westerton. So MARION MILLER was John Miller's daughter who likely was born in the 1730's or 1740's. GIVEN PATRICK MILLER, SR. B-1620 LIKELY HAD A TWIN SISTER NAMED "MARIONE" IT IS POSSIBLE JOHN MILLER OF WESTERTON WAS RELATED TO PATRICK MILLER, SR.

I did find a family tree of James Alston and his wife MARION MILLER (listed as born 1725 - earlier than I estimated) on FamilySearch.org. They had a granddaughter (Jane Alston b-1795) who also married a Miller (Andrew Miller b-1794). Also James & MARION Alston's son (James Alston also) wife had a 3rd great grandfather named James Miller b- 1599. See link below (11/12/18 EM):

BIRTH, ETC. RECORDS RELATED TO PATRICK MILLER

From Find A Grave: Memorial #85251159 John Hardy

There is a John Hardy, Sr. (4/27/1808 - November, 1888) that is buried at the Hardy Family Cemetery in Jamaica, Middlesex Co., VA. Several of his descendants are also noted on FindAGrave.

So there were HARDY'S in Middlesex County, Virginia (surname of Patrick Miller, Sr.'s spouse) at least starting around 1800 (if not earlier).

1666 Patrick Miller listed as a Vestryman at Chirst Church Parish - Middlesex Co.

My Cousin Anne Virginia "Jean" Agnew's papers store in the Library of Virginia - Richmond, VA (see my 2/16/18 EM); I think 1st two items below refer to Patrick Miller, Jr. (The Patrick Miller, Sr. of this profile's son). Handwritten notes under typed note about Patrick Miller (Sr.) as 1666/1667 Vestryman at Christ Church in Middlesex Co., VA:

1704: Typed: "P.97-1703-Patrick Miller was lame but was cured in 1704."

Handwritten under the above: "Not on Census of 1704, must have d. about this time. Insert military."

Arrow pointing to above (likely relates to "Insert military."): "8V191 - Military Census of Middlesex Co. 1687 Among those capable to server as footmen, were Patrick Miller & Wm. Barber." - this particular note likely refers to Patrick Miller, Jr. (in about mid 30's); his father, Patrick Miller, Sr. was dead about this time likely.

NOTE: If the birth dates of this Patrick Miller and his noted father, Williame Miller are correct; Williame Miller could not be Patrick's father since Williame would only have been 12 years old when Patrick was born.

https://archive.org/details/curiositiesofgla00stewuoft/page/174

Patrick's spouse is believed to be Margaret Hardy. In link above on page 222; A Henry "Hardie" is listed as a Glasgow, Scotland merchant (assume in 1700's): "Henry Hardie & Co., wholesale linen drapers...... The firm comprised in its membership Robert Carrick, John Brown of Lanfin, the brothers McAlpine, and William Fleming. It was known afterwards as Brown, Carrick & Co."

5/14/1650: BELOW IS NOT LIKELY THE PATRICK MILLER ON THIS PROFILE (even thought the below Patrick Miller also married a "Margaret Hardie"; near same name for each wife, but a month apart, more significantly the marriage below was a number of miles west of Edinburgh. HOWEVER, COULD THIS BE THE SAME PATRICK MILLER & MARGARET HARDIE THAT MAYBE HAD AN EARLIER CEREMONY DUE TO SAY A CHANGE OF RELIGION/CHURCH ASSOCIATION - AT A LOCATION TENS OF MILES AWAY FROM THE LATER MARRIAGE ON 6/18/1650????

Marriage information found at: https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=75&query=%2Bgivenname%3AMargaret~%20%2Bsurname%3AHardy~%20%2Bbirth_place%3AScotland~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1615-1635~%20%2Bspouse_givenname%3APatrick~%20%2Bspouse_surname%3AMiller~

"Margaret Hardie" married "Patrik Millar" on 5/14/1650 in Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland (which is about 30 miles east of Glasgow near the River Forth which flows east onto Edinburgh - about 1/2 way between Glasgow and Edinburgh)

Citing this Record "Scotland Marriages, 1561-1910," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XY7Z-KXW : 10 February 2018), Patrik Millar and Margrat Hardie, 14 May 1650; citing Falkirk,Stirling,Scotland, index based upon data collected by the Genealogical Society of Utah, Salt Lake City; FHL microfilm 1,041,942, 1,041,944.

The 4/5/1679 entry below likely would have been Patrick Miller, Jr. (the Patrick Miller on this profile's son) given his father had already died by this time. Patrick Miller, Jr. would have been about 26 years old in 1679.

4/5/1679: Patrick Miller witnesses a land sale by a John Mann (who appears to be from "Gloster County" but land is in Middlesex County) to a Thomas Roby: 1673-1677 Middlesex Co Va Order Book; Antient Press: (Page 24, Seventh day of December 1674)

A Patrick Miller (occupation farmer) married an Anna Purves/Purvess/Purvis on 7/17/1673 per the Edinburgh Marriage Register 1595-1700 (could have been a son of the Patrick Miller of this WikiTree profile): https://books.google.com/books?id=KIQwAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA558&lpg=PA558&dq=Patrick+Miller+1673+scotland+will&source=bl&ots=c08gXNomKY&sig=7B_BHxDhKLZ6d2AkbLdXJa6qH6I&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjfnJjnwqHcAhVoFjQIHZ_CAJAQ6AEIQjAD#v=onepage&q=Patrick%20Miller%201673%20scotland%20will&f=false

"Middlesex County, Virginia Wills, Inventories & Accounts, 1673-1812" published in 1989:

"Middlesex County, Virginia was formed from Lancaster County in 1673. The earliest wills are recorded in the first Order Book dated 1673 - 1680."

The earliest wills noted in the book above start in early 1675. If Patrick Miller did died in 1673; this may explain why his will has not been found since he died prior to the first Order Book began recording wills in early 1675. MAYBE his will was recorded in Lancaster County, VA prior to Middlesex Co., VA being split out of Lancaster Co., VA?

I am going to add Hannah (Miller) Lee as a sister of Patrick Miller b- 1620 and assume she was born in Scotland and died in Middlesex Co., Virginia.

PATRICK MILLER'S LAND PURCHASES & ADJACENT LAND OWNERS TO PROPERTIES

NOTE: LAND PATRICK MILLER PURCHASED APPEARS TO BE IN THE PINE TOP, VA DISTRICT - AREA GENERALLY EAST OF TOPPING, VIRGINIA - NOW MIDDLESEX CO., VA BASED ON LAND PATENT DESCRIPTIONS (SOUTH SIDE OF RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER). MIDDLESEX CO. WAS FORMED OUT OF THE SOUTH PORTION OF LANCASTER CO. ON 12/30/1674.

SOME DESCENDANTS I HAVE TRACED DOWN FROM MY GREAT...GREAT GRANDFATHER, JOHN MILLER (LIKELY THE SON OF THE PATRICK MILLER ON THIS PROFILE) LIVED IN PINE TOP, VIRGINIA AND TOPPING, VIRGINIA IN THE LATE 1800'S/1900'S. THIS GIVES SOME CONFIRMATION THAT MY JOHN MILLER WAS A RELATIVE (LIKELY A SON) OF THE PATRICK MILLER ON THIS PROFILE, SINCE PATRICK OWNED LAND AROUND TOPPING, VA.

1650: A John Garwood of Nansemond Co., VA (south of Norfolk and just east of Isle of Wight Co.) pays for passage of a Patrick Miller (but this could be a different Patrick Miller; or this Patrick Miller sold his headwright when he first came to Virginia).

10/19/1653 Patrick Miller purchased 150 acres- south side of Rappahannock - Lancaster Co. "p.134.

"Upon the S. side of Rappahannock River bounded on the W. & by N. with a creek dividing this & land of George Wading &c."

This entry is difficult to read. It appears to be a patent from Richard Bennett 19th Oct 1653 to Patrick Miller. Land bordering that of George Waddings. Patrick Miller sells above to Robert Wolverton 20 Jan 1654/7. Signed Patrick Miller. Wit: John Bell, Rich Hacker, Charles Hill. Rec. 7th Oct 1657. MENTIONS OF WADING'S IN LAND PURCHASES:

10/19/1653 Lancaster Co. 650 acres by James Bonner: "Upon S. side of Rappahannock River Beginning at the mouth of a branch which divides this & land of Thomas Dale son of Nicholas Dale deceased extending along the River E. by S. to marked trees dividing this & land of George W ding &c."

8/20/1655: A Patrick Miller paid for transport to Virginia (headwrights to purchase land with) for the following:

1655 Bryan, Thomas; Patrick Miller

1655 Cookely, Ralph; Patrick Miller-Lancaster

1655 Hart, James; Patrick Miller-Lancaster

1655 Hillary, Susana; Patrick Miller-Lancaster

1655 James, William; Patrick Miller-Lancaster

1655 Jenkins, William; Patrick Miller-Lancaster

1655 Nutt, James; Patrick Miller-Lancaster

"on S. side of Rappahannock River Adjacent land of Capt. Brocas deceased & George Wadeing."

August, 1656 Patrick Miller purchased 200 acres from James Bonner CAVALIERS AND PIONEERS PATENT BOOK No. 3; Pg 253

The above August, 1656 land purchase can also be found at HathiTrust.org: Virginia colonial abstracts. Abstracted by Beverley ... v.1. Fleet, Beverley, 1883- which gives a bit more info.:

"p.168. James Bonner sells to PATRICK MILLER 200 acres on S. side of Rapa. adj. land of George Warren. Dated 6th Aug. 1656 Wit.: Thomas Modestard, John Meredith; signed: Ja Bonner. Rec. 23rd Sept. 1656."

1656 Patrick Miller is listed as a debtor to William Carne - Lancaster Co. (could have been in what is now Middlesex Co. in 1656).

1656: Duplicate of above 200 acre land purchase: "p. 113. James Bonner sells 200 acres to Patrick Miller 6th Aug. 1656. Signed James Bonner. Wit: Thomas Madestard, John MEREDITH. Recorded 23rd Sept. 1656."

6/8/1664 (renewal of 10/19/1653 land patent above): Lancaster Co. 650 acres by James Bonner: "Lancaster Co., 8 June 1664, p. 372, (409). S. side of Rappahannock River, Beginning at the mouth of a br. dividing this & land of Tho. Dale, the son of Nich. Dale, dec'd., extending along the River E. by S. to trees dividing this & land of George Wading, S. by W. &c. Renewal of patent dated 19 Oct. 1653."

3/18/1663 Patrick Miller purchased 400 acres of land on south side of Rappahannock: from transcript (combined with other land purchase also I assume since the purchases were related:

Listed under line noting a Thomas Everidge who transported persons on 3/18/1662 in exchange for 450 acres of land; grant location "Elizabeth River"..... "in exchange for in the S. branch of Eliz. River, 18 Mar. 1662, p. 318, (304). 250 acs. on Nwd. side of the head of little Creek, a br. of the S. Br. of sd. River &c. running on land of Tho. Marsh &c. 200 acs. Beginning at miles end of Thomas Wight &c. 250 acs. granted to John Clarke 20 Oct. 1648, assigned to Jno. Browne, who assigned to Everidge, & 200 acs. granted to sd. Everidge 20 Oct. 1661. PATRICK MILLER, 400 acs. Lancaster Co., 18 Mar. 1663, p. 318, (305). S. side Rappahannock River about 6 mi. up the same, bounded E.N.E. on the River, W.N.W. on land of Nich. Dale & E. S.E. on a Creek dividing same from land of James Bonner. Granted to Nicholas Merryweather 10 Feb. 1653, assigned to Humphrey Hagget, who assigned to Cuttbert Potter, who assigned to James Marman & by him assigned to sd. Myler."

ON PATRICK MILLER'S 400 ACRE LAND PURCHASE NOTE ABOVE, IT IS STATED THE LAND IS ABOUT 6 MILES UP THE RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER WHICH WOULD BE LIKELY NORTH OF AROUND WAKE, VIRGINIA. THIS AREA WOULD BE IN THE MODERN DISTRICT OF PINE TOP, VA.

From Middlesex County, Virginia Wills, Inventories & Accounts, 1673-1812; published in 1989-notes a location of land owned by Mary (assume her nick name was Dorothy based on survey below - at age 73 at time of survey in 1789) and her husband John Berry:

"(p.38) 16 Feb 1789...John Berry, late Husband of DOROTHY MILLER (and laid off her third of Stone Point).... 195 acres. Adjoins William Jackson and Piankitank River."

THE PIANKATANK RIVER IS ABOUT 4 MILES SOUTH OF WHERE I THINK THE PATRICK MILLER/JOHN MILLER LAND WAS "MILLER ROAD" NEAR BAY OFF RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER. THIS MAYBE DUE TO FACT THAT MILLER LAND JOHN BERRY WAS ON REVERTED BACK TO SON(S) OF PATRICK MILLER'S SON JOHN AFTER JOHN BERRY DIES?

Patrick Miller that was married to Margaret Hardie died 10/22/1673 in Culbeiige Gargunnock, Stirling, Scotland (about 20 NE of Glasgow near end of river that flows to Edingburg).

Exact birthdate/location on Jerry Edward Stephens Family Tree on MyHeritage.com:

https://www.myheritage.com/site-family-tree-33469131/jerry-edward-stephens

6/18/1650: A "Patrik Miller" married a "Margaret Hardie" in Edinburgh Parish, Scotland (see link below). This is likely the correct Patrick Miller given the Patrick on this profile was born on the east side of Edinburgh; and based on birth record of a William Miller in 1607 (this Patrick's father) just east of Edinburgh to this Patrick's grandparents. So "Patrik" married close to the location of his likely father's birth.

The Ireland Quaker team and the Quakers project have now finished a review of the various Quaker Miller family profiles. You will see the results of our work in this freespace page https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Irish_Quaker_Millers%2C_and_the_emigration_to_Pennsylvania and this g2g post https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1729643/quaker-miller-families-of-ulster-and-pennsylvania.

As I result I plan to detach the profile of Miller-75508 from this family; there are no sources supporting this relationship and it is overwhelmingly more likely that his real father was a Gawen Miller of county Antrim.

Please reply to the comment on Miller-75508's profile, in the comments section of the freespace page or in the g2g post if you have any comments.

Jim, to start with, I did not mean to offend you. I am very impressed with all your research; it just does not have enough documents for proof. I am not new at this. I have been doing this since 1968. I have left undocumented people on my tree, but I explain why I did it and why it may not be right. Our common goal should be to make sure the people we add to our trees are really our ancestors. I can't even count how many times I have disconnected a limb on my tree because I could not prove it, or a new document came available that disproved what I had. I am always open to looking at things in a new way.

Now, I will tell you my concerns about this ancestor. He may connect somewhere with the other children, but he does not work for Randolph. Randolph did not name a child Patrick nor did any of his children and the rest of Patrick's children do not have a Randolph. Naming patterns were very important in Scotland. There is no land deed or Will etc that connects the two even though the records are intact for Lancaster and Middlesex Counties. I could find no records that even included common surnames with neighbors etc. We can't even get Patrick to America with his wife and children, and I think we are assuming that the children were born here but the dob's don't support that. I hate having a line that does not reach the immigrant, but I think in this case my Randolph will stay with unknown as parents. Thanks for taking the time and considering another point of view. We are all in this together and the more we dialogue with each other the better the chances we get it right. Susan

Susan,

Thank you for your effort to improve WikiTree profiles. You would also need to review the few thousands of other Miller and associated families WikiTree profiles I have originated or added information to began to comprehend my "assume, likely, maybe" statements are based countless records I have reviewed during the thousands of hours of researching my family and associated families. If you do detailed research on early Virginia families, you learn that wills, etc. often did not survived given all the court house burnings during the American Revolution, Civil War, and arson outside of times of war (such as King & Queen and New Kent Counties). So, other methods have to be used that take enormous amounts of time and effort. Jim

My goodness, what a lot of research on this person, but it is filled with assume, likely, maybe and could be. Without a Will I don't think this is enough to connect this family. Miller is such a common name.
