Biography

Robert Middlemas was born on 13 Dec 1867 in Eccles, Berwickshire, Scotland to Joseph Middlemas and Ann (Marshall) Middlemas.[1]

In 1871 Robert Middlemas (age 3) lived in Leitholm, Eccles with his father Joseph (41, Mason), mother Ann (33), and two brothers: Andrew (4) and Joseph (1).[2]

Robert's father passed away before the 1881 census.

In 1881 Robert Middlemas (age 13, Scholar) lived in Leitholm with his widowed mother Ann (44, Sewing Mistress in PS), two brothers: Andrew (14, App Tailor) and Joseph (11, Scholar), grandfather Robert Marshall (68, Draper & Clothier), aunt Mary Marshall (34, Draper's Daughter), and cousin Helen Riddell (15, Draper's Granddaur).[3]

Unable to locate Robert on the 1891 census - he was not living with his mother, who still resided in Eccles.

Robert married Elizabeth Ann Moir in or before 1900.

Robert and Elizabeth ("Tucky") had four children:

  1. Elizabeth Durward (Middlemas) Froud-Reid (1900-)
  2. Anne Marshall (Middlemas) (Shaw) Chiozza Money (1902-)
  3. Mary Marshall (Middlemas) (Ferris) (Turbridge) Waddington (1907-1986)
  4. Marshall Moir Middlemas (1909-)

Although family stories state that the children were born in Scotland, their three daughters were actually born in Northumberland, England and their son was born in South Africa.

In 1901 Robert Middlemass (age 33, Clothier & Taylor) lived at 2 Elm Terrace in Wallsend, Northumberland with his wife Elizabeth A (32), daughter Elizabeth (1), and servant Margaret A Kidd (17, General Servant Do).[4]

Robert and his family moved to South Africa between 1907 and 1909.

Robert Middlemas and his wife had a substantial farm near where Sandton City stands today, north of Johannesburg. Many of the younger family lived there at various stages of their lives and some of the paintings are held by the profile manager.[5]

Robert's wife Elizabeth Ann Middlemas (nee Moir) passed away on 1 Jul 1956 at Johannesburg General Hospital, aged 88 years.[6]

Robert Middlemas passed away on 1 Apr 1961 at Adams Road Extensien Amanzinteti, Durham District - he was 92 years old, born on 13 Dec 1868 [1867] in Scotland; he was a widower; he was a retired general farmer; cause of death was carcinoma of descending colon, duration 4 years.[7]
