Viktor was born in 1848 in Berlin. His parents were Jewish and he was a member of a Reform Jewish congregation in his youth, but was otherwise not actively raised in the Jewish faith; his wife Hedwig was Christian, and their children were raised to be Christian as well. He was a renowned chemistry professor who became Chair of the chemistry department at the University of Gottingen in 1885, then became chair of chemistry at the University of Heidelberg in 1889. He died by suicide in 1897.
