Biography

Duncan was born in the parish of St Nicholas in Aberdeen on 31 October 1857. His birth register cites his father as Duncan McPherson and his mother as Mary Murray. He was illegitimate at birth. His father Duncan was present at the registration of the birth and an additional note has been made in the margin of the birth registration: 'In an action relating to the paternity of a child named Duncan McPherson born October 31st 1857 at the instance of Mary Murray residing in John Street, Aberdeen against Duncan McPherson, combmaker, Aberdeen, the Sherriff Court of Aberdeenshire on the 30th July 1858 found that the said child was the illegitimate child of the parties referred. August 12th 1858'. ^[1][2][3]

In the 1861 census Duncan McPherson (age 3) was the grandchild of Jane Murray on Garvock Street, St Nicholas, Aberdeenshire.^[4]

In the 1871 census Duncan McPherson (age 13), Combmakers assistant, was the grandson of Jane Murray in Skene Square, 28, Old Machar, Aberdeenshire.^[5]

Duncan married Mary Ann Littlejohn in 1879. ^[6]

In the 1881 census Duncan McPherson (age 23), Merchant stoneware, was the married head of household at 13, Canal Road, St Nicholas Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire.^[7]

The family must have moved to York some time between 1881-84 as his son John was born in York in 1884.

In the 1891 census Duncan McPherson (age 33), Comb maker, was the married head of household in Mill Yard, 5, Lawrence Street, St Lawrence, York, Yorkshire & Yorkshire (East Riding).^[8]

In the 1901 census Duncan McPherson (age 43), Corporation labourer, was the married head of household in Ebor Court, 8, Walmgate, York, Yorkshire & Yorkshire (East Riding).^{[9] [10]}

Duncan's wife Mary Ann Mcpherson's death (age 50) was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1910 in the York district.^{[11] [12]}

In the 1911 census Duncan McPherson (age 53), Comb maker, was the widowed head of household at 10 Alexandra Yard Walmgate York, York, Yorkshire & Yorkshire (East Riding).^[13]

Duncan Mcpherson's death (age 59) was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1917 in the York district.^{[14] [15][16]}
