Biography

Robert James was bornin Carman, Manitoba in 1889, the son of John and Catharine McKenzie.

In 1891 Robert was 1, living in Carleton, Selkirk, Manitoba, Canada with his parents John, 38 and Catharine, 37 McKenzie, both born in Scotland. Their children were Catharine McKenzie, 10; Christine McKenzie, 8; Roderick McKenzie, 6; Isabel McKenzie, 4 and Robert McKenzie, 1[1].

In 1901 Robert was 11, farming in Dufferin, Lisgar, Manitoba, Canada with his parents John, 48 and Catharine, 47 McKenzie. Their children were Catharine McKenzie, 20; Christine McKenzie, 18; Roderick McKenzie, 16; Isabel McKenzie, 13; Robert McKenzie, 11 and John McKenzie, 9.

In 1906 Robert was 16 farming in Stephenfield, MacDonald, Manitoba, Canada with his parents John, 54 and Catharine, 53 McKenzie. Their children were Catharine McKenzie, 24; Christine McKenzie, 23; Roderick McKenzie, 21; Isabel McKenzie, 19; Robert McKenzie, 16 and John McKenzie, 14[2].

In 1916 Robert was 26, living at 393 Toronto St., Winnipeg Centre, Manitoba with his parents John Mackenzie, 64 and Katharin Mackenzie, 63 and three of their children: Katharine Mackenzie, 34, a Dressmaker; Robert J Mackenzie, 26 and John A Mackenzie, 24 a Surgical student (illeg..?). Robert was studying law[3].

On 18 Feb 1916 he volunteered for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force in Winnipeg, No. 523718. He was 25, a student, unmarried, 5'8" with blue eyes and fair hair[4]. He was posted to the Dft. A. Sec. No. 1 E Ambulance and arrived in England aboard the Empress of Britain. He received a Good Conduct badge on 17 Feb 1918 and joined the 16th Field Ambulance, shipping to France on 3 April 1918. On 8 March 1918 Pte. McKenzie of the C.A.M.C. (Canadian Army Medical Corps) was admitted to the 7th Canadian Staty. Arques, (France) hospital with influenza, He was with the No. 1 Field Ambulance Depot, 5th R.D. He was discharged from hospital and returned to the C.A.M.C. on 11 April 1918. On 16 April 1919 he was released and embarked from Liverpool aboard the S.S. Belgic on the same day arriving in Halifax on 23 April 1919. He was He was discharged from the C.A.M.C. on 1 May 1919, age 29[5].

On 18 June 1924 Robert married Marion Malcolm in Birtle[6].

On 2 Nov 1929 Robert registered for Homestead Number 653180 in Alberta, Part, NE, Section 3, Township 86, Range 8, Meridian W4[7].

Robert died on 5 Jun 1949 and was buried with Marion in Clanwilliam United Cemetery, Minto-Odanah Rural, Manitoba, Canada, Manitoba[8].
