By the time their daughter Janet was born, the family was living in Embo Parish, Sutherland[10] where they appear to have remained until their emigration, but it is believed he served in the military prior to his arrival in Canada. He emigrated to Canada with his family in 1832, to escape the Highland Clearances.[11][12], however, his wife is believed to have died at sea.[13]
Alexander passed away in Lanark Township, Canada West, in 1859.[15]
Research Notes
Please do not confuse this profile with Alexander McCooeye (1777-abt.1859) as there is no known connection between these two individuals. The McCooeye line seems to be carried across from Ancestry trees and is not accurate. I am attempting to straighten out the confusion, beginning with the duplicated lines, however it is a long, slow process. Crawford-15512 14:34, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
Child named Christy has been detached. There are currently no sources to connect her to this family. Crawford-15512 23:51, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
A birth record has not been located to prove the identity of his parents. It is possible he is the son of Angus McKay and Catharine MacKay but more research is required to confirm.
Conclusive military records have not been located. Crawford-15512 12:52, 4 November 2021 (UTC)

I am looking for an official record, not a family tree. Family trees are not sources. Is there a birth, marriage or death record showing your Thomas belongs to this line? My Thomas moved to the US shortly after his arrival in Canada, and none of my family changed their name. If you look at Alexander's headstone, his name is McKay not McCooeye. I really think you have connected to the wrong Alexander. I am happy to help sort this out, if you like.
There is no record of this that i have found. I have seen this suggested on other sites as well. Do you have records to show this was the case? The individual on Ancestry also has a different death location and I believe is confused with this Alexander. This family is well documented so I'm interested to figure out how this confusion started.
