Janet McGrigor was baptised 2 September 1819 in Kippen Parish to parents John McGrigor and Barbara Murray.[1] She was married to Archibald McDonald, with whom she had three children in Kincardine Parish, Perthshire:
They arrived at Otago, New Zealand in 1848 aboard the Philip Laing,[5] having another ten children there. They lived on Stuart Street in a wattle and daub cottage.[6]
In 1851 she was threatened with jail ‘if she did not control her temper’ in a courtroom over a brawl that had broke out between her family and the Crawfords.[6]
Janet MacDonald passed away on 5 December 1902 at her home on Ann Street, in Roslyn.[7][8] She is buried at the Dunedin Southern Cemetery.[9]
Research Notes
There is another baptism record for the right time that is often associated with Janet, but it is more likely that her mother's maiden name was Murray per the naming of the oldest daughter.
Baptised 27 February 1820 to parents Gregor MacGregor and Margaret Colquhoun in Campsie Parish.[10]
There was an administrative decision in 1889 that led to Kippen Parish being included entirely in Stirlingshire whereas part of it had been in Perthshire. Her birthplace is given several times as Callander, Perthshire which today is in Stirlingshire as well.
