John McFarlane was born in Scotland.

John McFarlane was born on 7 June 1870 and was the second son of Daniel McFarlane and Elizabeth McEwan.[1]

On the 1871 census, John is living at Coalgate, Alloa, with his parents where his father is a boot closer and his mother a fish seller.[2]

John's father died in 1874, and his mother has moved back to Stirling to live with her own mother but only has Duncan with her. It is not known if John actually lives with them or not as he appears on the 1881 census visiting the Stirling family. John's sister. Catherine, is in service and hiss younger brother, Robert, has been adopted by the Cook family.[3]

On the 1901 census, John and Harriet are living at 24 Rasen Lane, Lincoln, with their children.[6]
