Biography

John was born in 1810. He was the son of Duncan McEwan and Mary Ann Malloch at Blairnroar. He married Eliza Gardiner and they were living at Blairnroar in 1834. By 1841 they were farming at Drumdowie where they remained till 1846. By 1851 they were farming at Westerton, Muthill, Perthshire. By 1861 they were living in Glasgow where John was described as a watchman at the Glasgow barracks. Eliza died in 1877 at New Barracks, Maryhill, Glasgow. In 1879 John was living in the home of his daughter, Mrs Peter Graham at 79 Kent Road. In 1881 he was working as a labourer for the Glasgow rubber works described as a watchman, gatekeeper, labourer, and indian rubber belt maker. In February 1883 he was living with son-in-law Peter McEwen at Aberuthven, Muthill, Perthshire but by August he has moved to live with his youngest son James at 3 Bothy Row, Carronshore, Falkirk, Stirlingshire. There is wrote his last letter to his New Zaland family whom he knew he would never see again. With failing health and in misery he died at Carronshore 10 April 1884.
