In the 1871 census John (age 7), scholar, was the son of John McOwan in Lawers Cottages, Monzievaird and Strowan, Perthshire.^[4]

He, as John McOwan, married Bella CAIRNS, daughter of Adam Cairns and Janet Robb, on 10 June 1887 in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland.^[5] They had 8 children -
