George Te oti MacDonald was born on 3 January 1852, in Wairau Valley, Marlborough, New Zealand, the son of Francis John MacDonald and Rea Te Rangihiroa. [1]
A note in Catholic records, held at Nelson Provincial Museum, of baptisms of children of a Maori partner of Frank McDonald states "Not of Catholic faith, but promised.”[2]
He married Rina Puhipuhi Meihana 2nd September 1872, in Wairau Valley, Marlborough, New Zealand.
They had at least 6 sons and 5 daughters.
He died on 2 October 1916, in Marlborough, New Zealand, at the age of 64, and was buried in Grovetown, Marlborough, New Zealand.
Maori were not required to register births, deaths or marriages until 1913 when a measure for the Separate Registration of Māori Births and Deaths was introduced N.Z. Government BDM Historical Records Timeline
A separate register was kept, and Census information was separate for ‘Māori living as Europeans’ from Māori living in traditional pa or kainga. NZ BDM searches are thus very frustrating.
Whakapapa cited in Waitangi Tribunal settlements are accepted as authoritative, despite the lack of formal registration of births, deaths or marriages up to 1900.
