Note on registration of Māori births in NZ, prior to 1900:

Maori were not required to register births, deaths or marriages until 1913 when a measure for the Separate Registration of Māori Births and Deaths was introduced N.Z. Government BDM Historical Records Timeline

A separate register was kept, and Census information was separate for ‘Māori living as Europeans’ from Māori living in traditional pa or kainga. NZ BDM searches are thus very frustrating.

Whakapapa cited in Waitangi Tribunal settlements are accepted as authoritative, despite the lack of formal registration of births, deaths or marriages up to 1900.
