James was born on 11 October 1879 (third James - assume other 2 died in infancy) in Crawford, Lanarkshire, Scotland; he was the son of William McDonald and Janet (Aitchison) McDonald.
He married Mary Welsh in St Botolph, Bishopsgate, London on 12 May 1817:[1]
James and his family were members of Biggar's Party of 1820 Settlers to the Cape Colony:
The party embarked at Portsmouth on HM Store Ship Weymouth, which sailed on 7 January 1820. The Weymouth reached Table Bay on 26 April and Algoa Bay on 15 May. The party was located in Albany, north-west of Theopolis, and the location was named Woodlands.
James is believed to have passed away before 1822 when his wife remarried; no confirmation as yet.[2]
