Biography

Martha was born about 1852, and died in 1924. She was the daughter of John McDonagh and Martha Mathews.

Martha worked for the Post Office. She worked in Linton (where her family were based, around the goldfields) and went to Ballan from there. TROVE: "According to arrangement, Miss McDonagh, of the Post and Telegraph office, Linton, was, on Friday evening last, at the Shire hall, Linton, publicly presented with a valuable gold watch, suitably inscribed, as a tribute of respect from her many friends in the locality, on the occasion of her anticipated removal to Ballan." From Ballan, she went to Mooroopna (where, perhaps, her sister Jane met William Gibson). She was the Postmistress at Maffa by 1907 ^[1] - her brother Samuel and his family had moved there, and Samuel died in Maffra in 1907. In about 1910 Martha became Postmistress in Morwell ^[2] and the in-laws moved there with her. Samuel's wife, Flora, suddenly died in 1912 and the children were then split up - Frank to Uncle George in Gunnedah, Charlie to his Uncle Charlie McDonagh in Canowindra, and Eileen went to Sydney with Aunt Martha. Jack stayed in Morwell with Mr. Moyle who he worked for.
