Biography

Mary Louisa McCORMACK, daughter of James McCormack and Charlotte (Nicholls) McCormack, was born 29 May 1831 and baptised on 26 June by Rev. Robert KNOPWOOD MA in the Parish of Clarence Plains. James was a Publican at Kangaroo Point [later Bellerive].^[1]

Mary died of Consumption [Tuberculosis] on 7 January 1851. Her death was registered by the District Constable, William STANFIELD, of Rokeby, who recoded her age as 21, but she was actually 19.^[2]

Mary Louisa is one of four persons on an old, difficult to read gravestone at Rokeby Cemetery, row 3:

• Robert Melmer NICHOLS died 19 May 1867[?1862], aged 35. [Mary Louisa’s brother-in-law]
• Frances Elizabeth CHISHOLM (wife of James) died 21 Jan [July?] 1865, aged 36. [née NICHOLS, Robert’s widow, remarried after his death]
• James Jesse CHISHOLM, (son of James & Frances), died 7 Oct 1865, aged 0.
