Biography

John was born in 1835. He was the son of Melon McCormack and Mary Bennett. He passed away in 1863.

John R. McCormack enlisted in the Union Army in Company I of the 69th Indiana Infantry and was mustered into the U.S. service on August 19th, 1862. At the battle of Richmond, Kentucky on August 30th, 1862, he was severely wounded and was taken prisoner. The regiment was soon exchanged and reorganized. It was next sent down the Mississippi River to help reinforce General Grant. After Vicksburg surrendered McCormack became ill and died at Milliken's Bend, Louisiana. He was later moved to the Vicksburg National Cemetery and is buried among the unknown. John was the eldest of four brothers to serve in the Civil War. His younger brother Thomas of Company K, 8th Indiana Infantry was killed at Vicksburg on May 21st 1863. The other two boys, Noah and Andrew also served in the war.

Indiana Adjutant General records list him as Jonathan R McCormick. Age 28. Enlisted August 11, 1862, at New Castle. Company I, 69th Indiana Infantry. Died August 11, 1863, at Vicksburg. [1]
2) Widow's Claim for pension, WC133079.
WC133079. On September 28, 1863, a claim for pension was filed on behalf of a minor child. In the pension index that application was incorrectly indexed as a claim by a widow. [2]
On August 10, 1854, John McCormack married Nancy E Baughan, in Henry County, Indiana. (Pension File Page 13 - Clerk of Circuit Court, Henry County, Indiana.) [3]
On March 19, 1855, John and Nancy McCormack had a daughter, Mary Elizabeth McCormack. (Pension File Page 15 - Affidavit of Luther W. Hess, attending physician). [3]
The claim for pension of a minor child was filed by Wilson McLucas, resident of Harrison Township, Henry County, Indiana. The mother of the child, Nancy McCormack, died October 13, 1855. (Pension File Page 4 - Guardian's Declaration for Minor Children's Army Pension). [3]
