Research notes

Disambiguation Henderson-2297 05:08, 6 July 2022 (UTC)

The Jane, daughter of George McAdie (abt.1807-) and Catherine Sinclair, is differentiated from Jane MacAdie (abt.1826-1901) because:
- this Jane died in 1864 in Wick her parents stated as George McAdie and Catherine Sinclair (both deceased).
- the other Jane MacAdie (abt.1826-1901) died in 1901, the informant for her death being Jane Bain 5 Shore St, Wick, which address is that for her married granddaughter Jane (Robertson) Bain in the 1901 census, 2 months after Jane died.
- there is a plausible trail back through census data linking Jane Bain / Robertson to her mother Janet and linking Janet and Dolina
Jane's death cert. matches the baptism entry showing parents as George McAdiie and Catherine Sinclair, although her marriage cert. takes a mis-step and states her mother as Ann Sinclair (likely her aunt).
She is also not the daughter of George MacAdie and Catherine Mullekin. (They didn't marry until 1832 and do not seem to have a daughter Jane)

MacAdie-29 and McAdie-76 appear to represent the same person because: see research notes. I chose McAdie as the final version of her name as that appears on her baptism, and other records, apart from a second reference for her marriage

Jane's 1864 death cert. shows her parents as George McAdie, farmer, and Catherine Sinclair, both deceased. The informant was widower Alexander Bain.

As Jane's baptism also shows her mother as Catherine Sinclair (not Mullekin), with a witness David Sinclair, which latter is believed to have had siblings Katharen (bap. 1798) and Ann (bap. 1802), it seems likely mother Ann on Jane's marriage is an error. Perhaps she was brought up by her aunt Ann? Certainly by 1841 and 1851 census she is living wth her uncle David Sinclair, and neither of her parents are immediately obviously still around.

I suggest that this Jane be unlinked from George and Catherine (Mullekin) McAdie, and I'll propose a merge with https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/McAdie-76 - BUT only to be merged after the extraneous children shown for that Jane are shifted to another Jane, who died in 1901 in Wick, her death cert. showing them as Donald MacAdie and Jessie Swanson, which I cannot yet verify.

Hi Lorna

Thank you for all of this. Yes, I seem to have got out of sync with my records between here and Ancestry. I have all the same records as you do for Jane. Who are the extraneous children? Do you think that John and Catherine are not Alexander and Jane's children?

Thanks Alistair.

If you add me to the trusted list for "your" version of Jane I can complete the merge and tidy up of the notes.

John is with Alexander and Jane in 1861, Catherine I admit I added on the strength of the 1871 and 1881 census by date rather than checking Scotlands Birth and Baptisms to check her parents.

Hi Lorna

Do I need your email address to add you? I have Catherine and John's records and they confirm that Alexander and Jane are the parents. Both Catherine and John were reported as being "imbeciles" on census records. Obviously not the language of today.

Jane was born in 1828 in Alchorly, Parish of Halkirk, Alchorly is just a short distance from Toftingall where her father George was shown from at time of marriage. Her father was George McAdie Junior (Jnr stated at marriage) her mother was Catherine Sinclair, George and Catherine were married in 1827 in Watten Parish. I presume that one or both of Jane's parents died early as by 1841 Jane is shown living with her Uncle and Aunt, David Sinclair and Barbra nee Sutherland at Newlands of Clyth, which is situated just South of Roster and North East of Mid Clyth.

In 1847 Jane has her first daughter Janet Sutherland who has James Sutherland shown as reputed father and James is the nephew of Janes's Aunt Barbra. This is proved as by 1851 Janet Sutherland is living with her Sutherland Grandparents, her mother is still at Newlands in 1851. Janets Grandparents were John and Jane Sutherland at Knockally. This of course proves that James Sutherland was son to John and Jane Sutherland.

By 1856 Jane McAdie had her second daughter Dolinar Gunn and her reputed father was shown as Donald Gunn. In 1861 Jane McAdie is shown living with both of her daughters at Laid of Dunn. In 1871 Jane is at Cavin of Dunn on her own with Dolinar and of course Dolinar later marries Alexander Adamson. In 1871 Jane Sutherland was elsewhere and soon to become pregnant with her own daughter Janet Robertson, it is not until 1875 that Jane marries Allan Robertson, I presume Janet's father.

In 1881 Jane McAdie is with her Grandaughter Jane Robertson at Old Hall next to Loch Watten.By 1891 Jane and her Grandaughter have gone to live with Dolinar and her family at Borgie Farm House, Olrig.

It has taken some years to sort out Jane as she was mixed up on various trees with another Jane McAdie living in Wick and the fact that there were two George McAdie's both of Watten who both married a Catherine, the father of Jane married Catherine Sinclair the other George married Catherine Mulliken and it is the other George and Catherine that are found in Wick on the Census. There is no record of Jane McAdie's father George's baptism, but as he is shown as George Jnr at marriage it goes without saying that his father must have been a George, George Jnr is of Toftingall and there is George McAdie c1775 who married Elizabeth Henderson of Toftingall and it is here that George Snr lived, he is shown on other records as of South Dunn. So George Jnr's parents not totally proved I think it is almost certain that I have it right. (Or do I)

So still hunting for the birth record of George Jnr, but leaving the parents shown on the tree for now.

Please see the Disambiguation notes for both the Jane (daughter of George McAdie Jnr (abt.1807-) and Catherine Sinclair) who married to Alexander Bain, and the Jane MacAdie (abt.1826-1901) mother of Janet Sutherland and Dolina Gunn,
