Biography

Sarah Mathers was born at Kirkby in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, England in 1854^[1]. She was the daughter of George & Mary Mathers.

On the 1861 census, six-year-old Sarah lived with her parents George & Mary Mathers at Kirkby in Ashfield. Also in the household was her half siblings John Brunt (13) and Eliza Brunt (11) and her sister Mary Ann Mathers, aged 8.^[2]

Sarah was not living with her parents at Kirkby in Ashfield on the 1871 census.

She married William Barnes at St Wilfrid's Church, Kirkby in Ashfield on the 28th October 1873.^[3] William was a 19 year old bachelor and collier, and his father was Richard Barnes, farmer. Sarah was a 19 year old spinster, the daughter of George Mathers, a labourer. Witnesses to the marriage were Frank Denman and Ellen Channer.^[4]

On the 1881 census, William and Sarah lived at Sutton Road, Hucknall Huthwaite, where William was a coal miner. Also in the household were their children John George, Frank and Mabel.^[5]

In 1891, William and Sarah were still living on Sutton Road, Hucknall Huthwaite. They had four children at home: John G, Mabel, Beatrice and Lilley.^[6]

On the 1901 census, William and Sarah lived at Sutton Road, Hucknall Huthwaite, where William was a farmer. In the household were their children Mabel, Beatrice, Lily and Winifred A., along with son-in-law John A. Briggs and grandson Arthur. (Mabel's husband and son, although she was recorded as Mabel Barnes)^[7]

The 1911 census shows William and Sarah (surname recorded as Burnes) living at North Street, Huthwaite. William was a labourer for the Urban District Council, and Sarah confirmed they had been married for 37 years and had eight children, of which five were still living. Also in the household was daughter Winifred Alice, aged 17.^[8]
