Biography
William Manson was born in 1744 in Kirkwall, Orkney.
He became a master mariner, voyaging around the world.
In his thirties he married a Quaker and acted as managing partner in a colonial scheme. After losing all his property and his wife during the American rebellion, he worked in Jamaica in order to support his son and daughter.
In 1787 he married, secondly, Elizabeth Balfour, daughter of William Balfour, 2nd of Trenabie. They had one daughter, Mary Balfour Manson, b. 1788,[1] who married her cousin Capt. William Balfour, R.N.
William passed away in 1810; his wife Elizabeth survived him, passing away in 1822.[2]
