John Smith or Manson, son of Alexander Smith and Helen Manson, was born before March 1819 at Cogill and was baptised in Watten, Caithness, on 25 March 1819.[1] The manner of the baptism record confirms that John's birth was illegitimate. Alexander Smith's place of residence was transcribed as "Achentolf".[2]
The minutes of the Watten Kirk Sessions of 1819 provide more background to the story of John Smith's birth. On 11 January 1819, Alexander Smith, son of William Smith of "AuchinXXX", appeared before the elders to admit he was the father of Helen Manson's child. Both parents were called before the kirk congregation where they were "seriously rebuked and seriously exhorted to Repentence."[3]
In 1851 Helen was living in Catchery, in the parish of Watten, with her son John and her nephew, John Henderson. Christian Manson, a female visitor (and possibly Helen's sister), was also recorded in the household. Helen's occupation was "pauper" and she gave her place of birth as Watten and marital status as unmarried.[4] .
