Biography

Ireland Native
Joseph Malcomson was born in Ireland.

Birth

Joseph was probably born in 1851. He was the youngest son of Hugh Malcomson and an unknown wife.

Joseph possibly had siblings: Mary Jane (born 1845), John (born 1846). Sarah Jand and Thomas are other names possibly part of the family.

Marriage

Joseph Malcomson married Caroline Cadell on 12 July 1884 at The Thomas Street Methodist Church in Portadown[1]. Joseph was living in the Sleago Parish at the time he married. Caroline's father was Richard Caddell and also a weaver. The witnesses were Thomas Guy and Elizabeth Caddell.

Joseph and Caroline had 7 children:

Elizabeth Jane (born 1885 - died 1886),
William Joseph (born 1887),
Emily Jane (born 8 August 1889),
Sarah Anne (born 28 March 1892),
Samuel (born 4 September 1894),
Evelyn (born 5 February 1897) and
Martha Elizabeth (Lizzie) (born 1901).

In the 1901 Ireland Census[2] Joseph (age 40 - but should be 50!) is living at Kernan (SE of Portadown) with his wife Caroline (age 30 - but should be 34) and children William (age 14), Emily (age 11), Sarah (age 9), Samuel (age 7) and Evelyne (age 4). Note that the surname in the Census is Malcomation. Joseph is not able to read or write according to the 1911 Census. Although the ages of the parents seem to be wrong. The ages and order of all the children are backed up by other sources so this Census return does refer to the family - even if the spelling of their family name is wrong. Note also that the Form B return is missing for this record. The number 46 is the census house number not the actual house number that was probably in Jervis Street.

In the 1911 Ireland Census[3] Joseph Malcomson (age 60 - born in Co Armagh - Occupation: Labourer who isnt able to read or write) is living at 47 Jervis Street in Portdown Urban, Co Armagh with his wife Caroline (Caddell) Malcomson (age 44) and 5 children: Emily Jane (age 22 - Occupation: Warp Winder and still single), Sarah Ann (age 20 - Occupation: Linen Weaver and still single), Samuel (age 16 - Occupation: Linen Weaver), Eveline (age 14 - Occupation: Warp Winder) and Lizzie Malcomson (age 9 - Still at School). The religion reported for the family is Church of Ireland - even though Joseph and Caroline married in a Methodist Chapel. 47 Jervis Street is a 5 room house with 3 windows facing front according to the Form B return. There are 10 children noted as being born - or which 6 survive. Elizabeth Jane (born 1885) and William Joseph (born 1887) are not at home or have left by 1911.

Emily Caddle (age 32 - an unmarried aunt - Occupation: Spinner) is also there. She is described as an aunt to Head of House Joseph - but this is not possible as Joesph's wife is Caroline Caddell. It is noted that Joseph is described as unable to read or write yet the Form A signature is for Joseph in the same hand writing that is used to complete the rest of the form. Probably one of the children.

Death

There is a Joseph Malcomson who died[4] at 12 Joseph Street in Portadown on 1 January 1913. This record suggests that Joseph was 54 years old. This could be a mistake as he would have been 64.

Research Notes

Linen Weaving

All the Malcomson family in the 1911 Census report that they are employed in the linen industry.

For well over two and a half centuries Irish linen, especially that woven in Lurgan and its surrounding villages had a world wide reputation for excellence. This is the beginning of an interesting article at https://www.lurganancestry.com/linenindustry.htm. The site has a great deal of detail on the history of Portadown.

Family Matters

There is a record of a Joseph Malcomson born[5] in 1855 . His father was James Malcomson and his mother Margaret Nesbitt. However, the later marriage certificate shows that Joseph's father was Hugh and not James so this must be a different family.

There are some records that show Issiah as a name as well as Joseph. No official records found use this name and it is assumed to be a 'nickname'. An Ancestry tree gives Rachel Greer as wife of Hugh Malcomson - needs checking - but seems unlikely. https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/79846838/person/242322909812/facts
