OBITUARY
MR DUNCAN MALCOLM. (From Our Correspondent.) An old and respected resident of the Otautau district, in the person of Mr Duncan McLaren Malcolm, passed away at the Cairnsmore hospital, Invercargill, on Sunday, after a protracted illness.
Deceased was a native of Perthshire, Scotland, and came out to New Zealand with his parents, Mr. and Mrs Francis Malcolm, in the ship Arima, landing direct at Bluff. Shortly after their arrival the family settled near Winton, where he spent his boyhood and received his education. Along with his brother Francis he later took up a considerable portion of the Bayswater estate, which they farmed successfully. On the dissolution of the partnership each brother took a portion of the farm, and the separate properties have since been occupied by them. The late Mr Malcolm was a member of the Wallace A. and P. Association for many years, and was actively associated with the Heddon Bush branch of the Farmers’ Union. He was an ardent and liberal supporter of the Presbyterian Church, and occupied the position of elder in the Otautau church for many years. He was held in the highest esteem by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance, as he was upright and straightforward in all his dealings, and his word was his bond, while his home was noted for the hospitality which was meted out to all and sundry. Deceased took a very keen interest in politics, and was a strong supporter of the Reform party. He married Miss Isabella Dawson Mathieson, who predeceased him in 1924, and is survived by one son, Francis, and his daughter, May, who both reside on the home farm, and who mourn the loss of a beloved father and friend. The sympathy of a wide circle of friends goes out to them in their bereavement. Of his own generation there still remain his brother Francis and three sisters, Mesdames Leggatt (Winton), Taylor (Balfour), and Hamilton (Gore). The funeral took place at the Otautau cemetery on Tuesday, the services at the house and graveside being conducted by Rev. J. B. Bickerstaff, Stirling (a former minister of the Presbyterian Church and an intimate personal friend of the family) and Rev. W. H. Howes, Otautau.[2]
