Biography

Flag of Scotland
Native of Carnbee, Scotland

Thomas was most likely born in year of 1836 (at Carnbee, Fife) and he was the son of James Mackie and Jane /Jean Herd. [1] [2] [3] [4]

On the 19th of May 1860 at the age of 24, he married Miss Christian Edie in the Parish Church Manse at Kingsbarns. [3] [5] Christian was the daughter of John Edie and his wife Mary Wilson. [6]

At the time of their marriage, Thomas and Christian's first child was well on the way, and was born just 5 weeks after their nuptials.

Together they had 3 children:.

  1. Mary Wilson Mackie (1860-1912)
  2. Jane Herd Mackie (1862-1929)
  3. James Brown Mackie (1864-1946)

Following traditional naming patterns, [7] they named their 1st daughter after her maternal grandmother Mary Wilson. Their 2nd daughter was named after her paternal grandmother Jane/Jean Herd and their 1st son was named after his paternal grandfather James Mackie. Their son's middle name of "Brown" was most likely the namesake of his paternal great grandmother Isabell Broun/Brown.

Thomas worked as a labourer, but changed to a career in fishing sometime after moving from Carnbee to Crail.

Sadly he never got the opportunity to see his children grow into adulthood, nor see them get married. He never knew his children's children - his grandchildren. At the young age of 29, Thomas "Glass" Mackie passed away in a residence on Rose-Wynd in Crail on the 14th of July 1865. The cause of death was Typhus Fever and his father James Mackie was present when he passed. [4]

Three days after his death, Thomas Mackie was laid to rest in the Crail Churchyard cemetery, in an unmarked grave - 4 yrds 2 ft N from the NW pillar of Munro table stone. [8]

Scots often named children by following a simple set of rules. [7]

  • 1st son named after father's father
  • 2nd son named after mother's father
  • 3rd son named after father
  • 1st daughter named after mother's mother
  • 2nd daughter named after father's mother
  • 3rd daughter named after mother

His full name was recorded as "Thomas-Glass Mackie" when his father registered his death at Crail on the 19th July 1865. His paternal aunt, Marjorie Mackie (1811-1896) married a "Thomas Glass" in 1832 at Kilconquhar. [10] and it presumed that Thomas was named after her husband.
