Alexander Macdonell of Greenfield was from a prominent family in Upper Canada (Ontario).
Born 20 November 20, 1782 at Greenfield, near Aberchalder, in Inverness-shire, Scotland, he was the fourth son of Alexander Macdonell of Greenfield and Janet Macdonell of Aberchalder (a sister of John Macdonell of Aberchalder and Sir Hugh MacDonnell). He was also the cousin and brother-in-law of Miles MacDonell, the first governor of the Red River Colony.
Alexander worked as a fur trader and became a partner of the North West Company becoming very interested in the rights of the Métis with whom he worked.
He served as MLA from Glengarry from 1821 to 1824 in the Upper Canada Assembly and won the riding of Prescott as a Tory in 1835, dying of consumption while attending the assembly meeting. He served as sheriff of the Ottawa District from 1822 to his death.[1]
