Juozas Mačaitis gimė 1876 metais Suvalkų gubernijoje, Lietuvoje, Rusijos Imperijoje, ir buvo pakrikštytas vietinėje Rymo katalikų bažnyčioje.

Apie 1898 m. Juozas vedė Agotą Grumulytę, Jono Grumulio dukterį. Juozas ir Agota turėjo bent šešis vaikus, kurių vardai žinomi:

1. Antanas Mačaitis, gimęs 1898 m. Kaimelyje, Šakių raj., Lietuvoje, miręs 1914 m.;
2. Marija Ona Mačaitytė Stalioraitienė, gimusi 1900 m. Kaimelyje, mirusi 1985 m.;
3. Juozas Mačaitis, gimęs 1908 m., miręs 1946 m.;
4. Elena Mačaitytė Fairbanks Barber, gimusi 1913 m.;
5. Teresė Antanina Mačaitytė Hickman, gimusi 1912 m., mirusi 2003 m.;
6. Ona Leokadija Mačaitytė Karguvienė, gimusi 1916 m., mirusi 1995 m.

Juozas Mačaitis was born in 1876 in Suvalku gubernija, Lithuania, which at that time belonged to the Russian Empire.

About 1898 Juozas wed Agota Grumulyte, daughter of Jonas Grumulys and Agota (?) Fukartaite. Juozas and Agota had at least the following children:

1. Antanas Mačaitis, born in 1898 in Kaimelis, Sakiai, Lithuania, died in 1914;
2. Marija Ona Mačaityte, born in 1900 in Kaimelis, died in 1985; married to Juozas Stalioraitis.
3. Juozas Mačaitis (Joseph Matchites), born in 1908, died in 1946, married to Mary McMahon;
4. Elena Mačaitytė (Helen Matchites), born in 1913; married to James Fairbanks and Ray Barber;
5. Teresa Antanina Mačaitytė (Annette Matchites), born in 1915, married to Erwin Hickman;
6. Ona Leokadija Mačaitytė (Ann Matchites), born in 1916, died in 1995, married to Walter Alfred Kargus.

Juozas Mačaitis died on 20 January 1929 and lies buried in Saint Andrew's Catholic Cemetery, Christopher, Franklin, Illinois. ^[1]
